Author Topic: Faster sync speeds on the way? Openreach to rollout 3dB target SNRm for FTTC  (Read 14227 times)

Good news for those with stable Openreach FTTC lines which could see small increases in their sync speeds next year.
The current default target SNRM is 6dB but with effect from March 2017, the NGA DLM (Dynamic Line Management) may select 3, 4, 5 or 6dB depending upon how stable the line is.

We had been monitoring the Openreach trial of a 3dB Target SNRM on our forum which was undertaken in April earlier this year.  Those users who were on the trial saw their speeds increase and on the whole the trial appeared to be sucessful.

Based on our observations speed increases are roughly in line with the following figures.

~ For existing Sync speeds of around 20Mbps -  each 3dB is worth 3Mbps
~ For existing Sync speeds of around 40Mbps -  each 3dB is worth 6Mbps
~ For existing Sync speeds of 60Mbps or more - each 3dB is worth 11Mbps.

BT wholesale ADSL (copper) lines already have a 3dB profile available to them.  Obviously this increase wont make any difference if you are already syncing at the maximum speed ie 80Mbps or 40Mbps if you are on a 40/10 or 40/2 product.

No benefit to my line because my line is sync at 79999/19999 but I just wish Openreach uncapped 80Meg to push faster sync rate speed as long your line support it. My line can get 115Meg but Openreach capped it at 80Meg for 2 years now, time to push uncapped.  >:(

I suppose those of us on ECI with high ES lines may have to wait to see if G.INP does ever return next year and then possibly once thats applied we might then see new targets imposed if things settle down??

If its the same as the trial there is no need for G.INP although it would help, I'm on an ECI cab and I'm sure I was on the trial for a while.

a poor mans replacement to vectoring :) , is good news as it will work well alongside g.inp.

Hopefully ECI cabinets get g.inp next spring as well meaning us ECI users will benefit in the same way.

BT wont want lines flapping between different targets so it would be logical if the existing DLM colour codes are still used which if is the case then a line like mine in amber would not get a lower SNRM target, as it would require green, which is good as I would rather have a lower sync speed then a flapping line.  This is why g.inp is important as that would push most lines to green and would probably stay green at even 3db.

  I would hope that G.inp made 3db viable for a lot of people but I don't think that we know what the ES rates for green/amber/red are with G.inp.  With interleaving the ES rate needs to be very much less than green to get back to fast path but  I don't think we know the exact criteria.

Can I assume this will also effect the upload?

Im on SKY FTTC 40/10 product with an (approximate) 800m line.

I currently get  40/6.5mb, with max att showing as 44/7

My SNR is 7.3 during the day, lowering to 6.8 at night on the DS and always around 6db on the US.


I realise that I am capped at 40mb and truth be told don't need more either way, just good to know.  Will there also be a possibility that the lower SNR will increase the ping times?  I used to be 7ms-9ms ping but this increased to 17ms.  IF anything I would rather a better ping! (Not that I could notice 10ms in gaming.....)

This sounds good and hopefully bring me back up to what I was receiving two years ago when I was first connected.
I believe I was synching at bang on 74/20, This has reduced over time to 64.5/19.9 with SNR of 6.4/6. Hopefully I should gain my original speed back assuming I get switched. ES/hour are currently sitting at 0.09 with a weeks uptime since a firmware upgrade.

Openreach will be extending their 'trial' of the variable dB and new DLM algorithm from Monday 16 January to select cabinets on the following exchanges (below).

A few points here though:

- ECI cabinets are excluded (I assume the new DLM is not fully tested/supported yet).
- Any line that has had the existing DLM intervene, due to poor performance, will be excluded from being moved over.
- Around 10% of lines are expected to move to the new XdB and DLM algo.

With odd exceptions, they aren't exactly rolling it out to major demographic areas (e.g. the M-i-L's Devon village is on the list.)

My knowledge of the South West isn't great, but are they all Avon, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall exchanges?

Yeah.  You are  correct. Perhaps g.inp needs to resolved on eci first if this will ever happen.

Wiltshire too with Trowbridge..

its logical g.inp would be a requirement, as they dont want to risk higher fault calls.  3db without g.inp will be risky on that.
