Disconnects & Crackling phone line
« on: November 11, 2016, 07:32:38 PM »

Hi,

I kept my VDSL line after last month's continuous disconnects. The weather was good & I got 20+ days of good connection. It has been raining heavily today, I've had disconnects & crackling telephone at times.

Since I have a crackling telephone this may be an opportunity to find out where the fault is on my line? Can Openreach find the source/position of the crackling even on a 2.8km line?

If the fault is "hard" (i.e. consistently present), then I would expect even an Openreach new recruit to be able to find the defective joint (or defective section of cable). So I'll answer your question with a tentative "yes".

If I had a crackling phone line I would be calling the voice provider / isp to get this fixed

@burakkucat, @NewtronStar,

I only noticed the crackling tonight, I never use the phone line.

I'm going to wait until the line is constantly crackling & then get them out to fix it because if it's not faulting when they arrive they can't fix it.

Sick of this tbh

Hi

I would use satellite broadband only if every other broadband service had failed

It is easy to setup, with kits costing around 150 ish, some less some more expensive

You will be limited on bandwidth and overage charges could be expensive

The biggest issue you will have to accept would be the latency. Anywhere between 600 - 1500 ms, with norms from my experience been around 760ms

It depends upon what your using your broadband for, if gaming, it's no good but if just using broadband for general browsing, is acceptable

The transmission packets are larger blocks

If your serious about sat broadband, my advice would be to get the dual channel router, 1 channel up and 1 channel down, as most are only single channel, 1 channel for both up and down

Have you checked to see if LOS broadband is available - much better then sat broadband

Many thanks

John

@d2d4j,

my mate's Brother said he was getting LOS installed, waiting on him to get back to me with a review

Is LOS reliable & fast in your opinion?

Hi

Yes, LOS is an excellent service, as long as it's ac and the provider has a big enough pipe

The latency is around 10ms, and our clients very rarely go down. LOS is shown as been up longer then fttc in our logging systems

However, I stress, this is only my experience from clients we look after, including sat broadband, los, fttc and adsl but they are business accounts, not residential

Many thanks

I have to laugh at the poor quality of my line;

25db snr, 0.6Mb down;

absurd

If you can face it, the time has come for you to compose a concise, factual, email message and send it to the Openreach CEO, Clive Selley.

The relevant address should be clive.selley <at> openreach.co.uk. (I have displayed the address in that fashion in an attempt to make things difficult for the typical e-mail address harvesting bots!)

You should. He answered me personally a couple hours after I emailed him. Then his office who check his emails also answered the same day. Within 24 hours I had a dedicated HLC (high level complaints) advisor who was always the same person/single point of contact. I had a local Supervising Engineer out within a fortnight

Attach a few snapshots like the snrm graph above. Detail all the failed attempts to fix your line. I would expect some more enthusiastic efforts to fix your line after going down that route.

@burakkucat, @j0hn,

I got a response cheers. He forwarded my message to the relevant people.

The person who contacted me said they are planning FTTP to my area between January & April. Not sure when they are planning on doing that work tho.

I had 2 engineers out today, I think they know there's a problem but can't do much to help.

They left me with a Huawei modem (EcoLife HG612) to match my cabinet so they could monitor what happens. I can't log into this thing tho to get the stats, anyway of logging into it without cracking the Firmware?

cheers
