Turn the D-Link 2740B into a DG834N with DGTeam firmware
« on: May 06, 2009, 06:44:26 PM »

I happened on this guide today, and I can't vouch for it, so all the usual warnings apply - at your own risk!

Hmm yes I just spotted that too and personally am not going to risk it.

If I want a Netgear I will go out and buy one

DGT Does have some useful features, but I don't need them so...

That's probably a good decision. :)

As I can't resist the temptation to fiddle with things, I've done this upgrade on a 2740B, and it does work. One thing not (so far) mentioned in the instructions is that, if you've previously upgraded the firmware you will need to restore the original firmware first. There's a link to the original firmware in the instructions.

One particularly useful feature of the DGTeam firmware is that you can easily tweak the target noise margin from the web interface, and the change is saved, so that it survives a switch off/on.

Hi Eric,

I didn't know you used a DSL-2740B? I thought you used D Link?

Anyways I like you also like and want to fiddle with this but I am not as I don't want to void my 11 year warranty!!! ;D

Er.. I don't think you quite meant that. ;D

I've got a little collection of routers, and I swap them round from time to time, just to try and break something. :)

No matter. Yes, I do have a DG834GT and it's probably my favourite. But the 2740B seems to have identical performance, and with the modification it has the same features as well.

Is it still working well or have you had any issues with it?

So far it's working fine. There haven't been any unexpected dropouts or anything like that, and it seems to be holding onto a slightly higher IP profile than I had with the DG834GT.

Hi

Glad to see a couple of people have been tempted to try turning the D-Link into a Netgear.

You can safely go back to the D-Link firmware if you wish and it shouldn't affect warranty as once flashed back I doubt there is anyway of knowing.

However there is a chance for any firmware update to go wrong so usual warnings apply.

I ran the Netgear firmware for quite a while, works absolutely fine.

I've now gone back to the D-Link firmware for a  couple of reasons, a new firmware (2.97) has appeared and I'm also hoping the GPL source for this will appear shortly also.  I've been able to add some extra web pages to the setup interface on an older GPL source, and hope once the newest source is out I can add some tweaks as well as update some of the Linux modules for bug fixes etc.

The D-Link firmware seems to have better Linux networking code than that used by Netgear.  For example QOS is supported but is lacking on the Netgear range.  I can also pass the Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool with the D-Link firmware, where as the Netgear would fail on the NAT test.

Regards

Phil

That's very interesting Phil. If you could add target noise margin tweaking and saving to the D-Link firmware it would be a very attractive option. And many thanks for what you've done so far.
