Modem & Router Advice (Fibre, TalkTalk)
« on: October 28, 2016, 10:41:29 AM »

Hello,

I found this forum via a google search, trying to research what router/modem to replace my shocking HG633 from talktalk with. The wifi keeps dropping all the time and it's just not okay, I'm on their fibre package with speed boost (80 down/20 up). Here's the output from BTs DSL Checker for my address:

I don't have an Openreach modem (I have one of these at my other property with a RT N66U that works perfectly).

Usage:

- Netflix (4k)
- Plex server (my pc is good so transcoding is fine, not sure what pressure this pouts on the router?) / Playing plex from TV downstairs with Fire stick
- Gaming (wired, not wireless)
- 2 users (1 light, 1 heavy)

Any advice would be appreciated! I was thinking maybe a VR200 or something?

Thank you in advance.

Yes pretty much all of the TP Link routers will be better but if you don't mind spending £120 the TP Link VR900 is your best bet, its arguably the best 3x3 stream router around for wifi coverage (combined modem/router). If money is no object go for the VR2600, which is TP Link's current flagship router (4x4 stream). Otherwise TP Link VR2600 > VR900 > VR600 > VR400 > VR200.

Another make to consider is ZyXEL.

Either the VMG8324-B10A, the VMG8924-B10A, the VMG1312-B10A or the VMG1312-B10D.

Please also take a look at the initial post of the Combined VDSL2 Modem Routers thread.

Oh and I nearly forgot . . . Welcome to the Kitz forum.  :)
