News this morning from Openreach saying they will be one of the first operators to deploy G.Fast

G.Fast is taking off worldwide, but we’ll be one of the first to deploy

Pete Bell, Network Portfolio Director in the chief information officer (CIO) team will be speaking at the Broadband World Forum about our development of G.fast, our other ultrafast solution. Sharing the pioneering work by Openreach, BT Group and with some of our CP customers, Pete will talk about driving world standard changes, our successful trials and the appointment our first strategic kit suppliers - Nokia and Huawei. You can also listen to him on AudioByte talking about our plans.

A recent report by Ovum, an independent analyst, looked at G.Fast and what the rollout plans are for different carriers and how the technology will develop. Ovum predicts G.Fast will be serving nearly 30 million subscriber homes around the world by 2021. Many operators around the globe are planning to use G.Fast because it’s fast to deploy and customers can self-install, but we’ll be one of the first. All part of our big bold plan to deliver faster speeds for the UK.

After reading the BT update and surfing BBC's red button technology section last night I was surprised to see this.

Swiss beat UK's BT to next-gen G.fast broadband

Quote
Switzerland is the first country in Europe to deliver so-called ultrafast broadband to customers through traditional copper infrastructure, according to service provider Swisscom.

It said 1,000 customers were now using a G.fast connection, which can reach speeds of 500Mbps.

G.fast lets copper cables carry data at faster speeds than before.

In the UK, BT's Openreach has been trialling G.fast technology, but customers can not yet buy packages.

Openreach has been installing the fibre optic cables that facilitate superfast broadband across the UK, but has so far focused on connecting street cabinets rather than homes.
