DMT Tool - what do the red arrows indicate ?
« on: April 13, 2008, 08:58:45 PM »

What do the red arrows indicate in the following DMT Tools image ?
I assume this is due to the recent SNRM reduction to 3dB to improve upstream bandwidth.

I have no idea at all :) A google search doesn't yield much in the way of info either.

Anyone here speak German well enough to go ask on their forums?

Jawohl!
Here's a post on the German forum which answers the OP's question. For the linguistically challenged (well, that's not fair, but I'm allowed to crow just a little...), I shall summarize:

The red arrows indicate that the SN margin on those frequencies is negative. They are so noisy that they can't carry any data but will simply generate errors.

(Have to confess I read German at uni... :graduate:)

Ta :)

A 3dB profile is most definitely not a good idea then!

Thanks rwm32

Since re-booting the router it's been stable - I'll keep an eye on it.
It seems that the ISP (Be) can only adjust the SNRM of both upload and download at the same time.
But maybe I can now adjust the download SNRM using DMT Tool back to 6dB.
In other words 3dB up, 6dB down. It sounds crazy I know but the noise only appears at the higher (download/MW band) frequencies so it might work. I'll keep you all informed about the results.

Asymmetric SNRM

The noise returned tonight so I turned the SNRM up to 6.5dB on the download using the DMT Tool.
The upload is 2dB - no noise appears at these frequencies.
