Advice if I should revert to ADSL
« on: September 30, 2016, 11:26:13 AM »

Hi Guys,

should I switch back to ADSL? The problems with my line are too much

I'm 6km from my exchange, 2.8km from my cabinet

Or would I just be switching problems from 1 to another?

cheers

The segment of your circuit's SNRM plot that you have posted above does not show a "long line" problem for G.993.2 (VDSL2) but a clear indication of one (or more) infrastructure faults. A competent CP should be capable of seeing the problem and should task Openreach to fix the fault.

Cheers @burakkucat,

you should check out my SNR graph for the past 5 days - horror story

It's nearly Halloween after all

What's a CP?

I would like to know what sort of sync you would get with ADSL before revering back to ADSL

@NewtronStar,

I have attached the BT availability checker

But I know the values are incorrect because when my VDSL line works I get a 8.7Mb down & a 1.1Mb up

I used to get a 2.6Mb down when I had ADSL but it dropped to 2.2Mb & become erratic hence why I got VDSL

Not much of a difference between ADSL and VDSL it looks like 2Mbps with the BT availability checker which is only a very rough guide due to how it averages the result of many lines in the area.

8Mbs is looking good for a rounded figure of a 3 kilometer line on VDSL the only thing it's not a stable connection and you also seen the same effects on ADSL it became erratic, so that would point to an issue on the copper side D-side anywhere from your premises to the PCP cabinet.

@NewtronStar,

The line from my house to pole was replaced & a D-side swap was done from the pole to the junction box half way to the PCP

When it works it's great but when it's broke it's bad

Unfortunately there is/are one or more defects in the current D-side metallic pathway over which your circuit is provisioned.  :(

To change the type of service will not make any difference, as exactly the same metallic pathway will be used.

Thanks @burakkucat,

I agree with what you are saying.

I am paying £25 per month for the privilege of this broken VDSL whereas I could be paying £5 for broken ADSL  ???

The D-side needs to to fixed now when I think back to BlackSheep about joints on the D-side there can be a joint each 200 meters so 2800 meters divided by 200 = 14 joints that is a lot of manhole covers to inspect

@NewtronStar,

I think the only manhole covers on my line is the 1 under my pole & the 1 at the joint half way to the PCP

The cable is buried in the soil, I know because road works were performed recently & I could see the cable when the soil was dug up

No need to despair though, it can be sorted out surely. My line was rubbish many years ago when cars kept simply driving over the cable on a section that wasn't even buried.
