Sudden Jump in FEC Errors/Hour
« on: September 30, 2016, 04:10:53 PM »

I have Infinity and a Billion 8800 NL Router.

DSLSTATS normally shows low download FEC errors/hour, usually 0 but max 300, and no CRC.

However, a couple of days ago FEC errors per hour jumped to 350,000 but again, zero CRC.

Is this to be expected? What might be the cause of this behaviour?

Was this just a brief burst of FECs, or is it continuing?

It seems to have been a one-off because subsequent days seemed to revert to very low rates.

In that case, there's probably nothing you can do (or need to do) unless it recurs. It could be some brief external source of interference or it could be the start of an intermittent bad joint in the line somewhere. Without more information any investigation is likely to get nowhere.

Things that come to mind, car running over cable, water ingress (was it raining?), work in the exchange or at a cab. I'm sure there will be other possibilities.

Over the past few days DSLSTATS shows the following download FEC errors per hour

30 Sept       929
29 Sept       900
28 Sept         0
27 Sept       345
26 Sept    351120
25 Sept       222
24 Sept         0
23 Sept     17512
22 Sept         0
21 Sept         0

I will try to find some correlation with weather/works

This now seems to have settled to around 300-500

Is this an acceptable figure?

Yes, that perfectly OK. FECs are generally of no consequence unless you see a lot of CRCs and errored seconds as well, and a few hundred FECs per hour is quite insignificant.
