help files gone awol
« on: April 13, 2008, 10:21:44 AM »

I wonder if someone could solve a little problem which, although not serious, is bugging me a bit.

Am running XP SP2, and this problem has arisen since I installed a new motherboard, processor and ram although I don't know if that and the problem are connected.

All help files from all applications have gone missing, and that includes the Windows help and support centre.

When I click on "help" anywhere, and in any program, I get the error report "Windows HTML Help Exchange has encountered a problem and needs to close". When I click on the "further detail" button, all that is in there is "Application hh.exe"

Would be grateful if anyone could shed some light on this annoyance.

Yes, along with SP2............then went online and got all the hotfixes and patches that I had lost.

I also notice that the guy who did the rebuild has installed Internet Explore 7, which I did not want.

I have done a search, since posting above, of my XP installation disc but hh.exe appears to be not on that disc.

Sorry, bad manners on my part not to say thank you for the response.  :-[  Thank you.

Hmmm, dunno what to suggest next, apart from running a system file check.

Start / run, type in sfc /scannow

Run SFC first, and go make a cup of tea, it could take some time.

@ floydoid........well, sfc /scannow whirred away for a while, but alas to no avail as it kept asking, nay demanding, from time to time  that I put a disc into drive F. The installation disc was in drive F, but that apparently was not sufficient. Maybe I need to make a slipstreamed XP/SP2 disc and try that.
However, that will for later, after I have finished important works such as the three word story etc.

@ UnkyUB, thanks for you imput. I did indeed do a google and there are, as you say, lots of refs. to hh.exe, but I could not find a source from which to download it.  :'(

Will try with a slipstream disc, and in the meantime will do a quick checkdisc.

All this for something that I never use, but as I mean to hand this machine onto one of my grandaughters, I thought that at least I could pass on a fully functioning one.
C' est la vie, as scottiesmum may say.

Tufted, I've zipped up hh.exe (I'm on XP-SP2) and uploaded it for you... it would appear to live in the c:\windows folder.

Let us know how you get on mate, tho it is a bit like the visually impaired leading the blind at the moment.

BTW, it's no trouble, and only took 2 minutes to do. :)

Well, the plot thickens.

hh.exe, thanks to floydoid, is now where it should be, and.................situation still the same.

A bit of googling leads me to believe that the problem is a corrupt HHctrl.ocx file, which appears to be something linked to ActiveX controls in IE7.

Will off and see if we can cure that.

Thanks again, floydoid, for your efforts and time.................that new file you kindly gave is now in place, but the problem is not resolved.

Will do some more googling. (Tomorrow, had enough today)

Thanks again.
