What do BT do during maintenance at the exchange?
« on: September 25, 2016, 10:59:58 PM »

Plusnet send out emails when exchanges are under going maintenance between 00:00 - 06:00.  Does anyone know what work is done during these maintenance periods?  There are usually 5-10 exchanges a night no geographical relationship.  Thanks

It could be absolutely anything that could/may/will (delete as appropriate) affect the service provided to the CP's end users.

For example, take a look at the TalkTalk Business network status page. Anything that you see there could, conceivably, also occur (within reason) in a BT building providing Internet service access for ISPs such as Plusnet.

Plusnet is of course BT-based (and owned), and there will possibly be a load of detailed stuff available from BT (e.g. BT Wholesale) on the web somewhere, although whether it's closed off to the public or not, I can't say.

@burakkucat - A really excellent link there, good find thanks. (No AAISP over TT option here unfortunately, no choice - BTW only.)

For BT work, reported via the ISP Andrews & Arnold, see

Nothing to do with Plusnet being part of BT.  The service status emails are provided by Plusnet UserTools
Anything on usertools was written by members of the Plusnet User Group (users not staff!).  iirc it was Phil who wrote the SS update tool... long before they were taken over by BT.  He also wrote the exchange checker.  At the time it was all hosted on a really old server (that looked more like a late 90's desktop PC) which was donated by Plusnet and maintained in their server room.

The info is available to all ISPs as a BBCR feed.   It just depends on the SP how they pass this info on to their customers and whether or not they want to provide a customer friendly interface.   It covers various things... most go unnoticed, they may be updating or installing new equipment or just updating software.
