This particular issue is not an issue.

More broadly if any country should have control or significant influence on the Internet I would prefer it to be the US, even over the UK(the UK does not have the culture of the First Amendment).

I remember back in the day if you wanted to type something that the British government didn't like you could have the site hosted in the US and come under the freedom of speech laws there. I think this situation as changed a bit these days as the British government have caught up and tried to claw back the right to prosecute.

But yea, even with all Americans problems, I'd still prefer to keep them in control.

I can't really think of many countries I'd trust with that much control.

“Donald J Trump is committed to preserving internet freedom for the American people and citizens all over the world,” Miller said.

Hmmm seems a bit hypocritical..  didn't Trump some time last year say that parts of the Internet should be shut down... it was at the same time he said that America invented the Internet (Ummm Berners-Lee anyone?)

Didn't the internet as we know it have its origins in Arpanet, which was an American project (ARPA/DARPA) ? Berners-Lee was the www, not the internet, no? If I remember correctly.

Yep..   Although it is the www which most people think of as "The Internet".   Without the web, sites such as this wouldnt be available.

The idea for "packet switching" came about independently in the US and UK.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Baran#Selling_the_idea
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Davies#Packet_switched_network_design

Those ideas then fed into ARPANET, and the UK's NPL network.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARPANET
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NPL_network

Reading those articles, you can see there was certainly a fair amount of cross-pollination going on.

If you want to understand where the Internet came from I'd suggest this book -

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Where-Wizards-Stay-Up-Late/dp/0684832674

Enjoyable read, fairly detailed coverage of all the individuals and organisations involved.
