Take a look at all of the forum threads referring to the ZyXEL VMGnnnn-B10n devices. (Where nnnn is a four digital (decimal) number and n is an alphabetic character.)

In one word: "Ugly!" However if you can get a free one, then do so and try it out.

As for the chip-set, I believe it is Lantiq (a.k.a. Intel) but perhaps other members will be able to assist on that point.

Depends on the model, the one Zen supply unfortunately OpenWRT does not (at least last I checked) support the DSL modem.

So I'm curious, how do APs work with cats, do you mesh them?

Typo, I meant to say the one Zen supplied which indeed is the Fritz!Box 7530.

Anyway point still stands, OpenWRT Wiki page:

Unsupported Functions: DECT, DSL modem

So I'm curious, how do APs work with cats, do you mesh them?

No not in this case as mesh was grayed out, so i guess its only for wifi repeaters
But its by far the best solution ive used

The modem/router is by the frontdoor, a bad place for wifi
So ive a cat 5e going from it to living room and to the kitchen

I took them off auto setup and set them to the same SSID and password, but changed them to channel 1,6,12 letting the tablets jump when needed

I just mac address filter for things like wifi lights so they dont move to a further away AP as they sometimes do, then alexa cant talk to it if next door washes out that 2.4g (bulbs dont do 5g)

You can use SSID names like network_AP1, _AP2 or different passwords too

I like this better than wifi repeaters as you get 100% from the router to AP, rather say 60% repeated to what looks like 100%

In most cases the 2.4g is so close in can be set to low and never get wiped out (mostly)

I use a wifi analiser on a phone to help with wifi, it opens up the one SSID to show the APs

Basically if you flash OpenWRT then it becomes a none-DSL router without VoIP functionality.  I'm using mine just as a WiFi Access Point.

I did rather expect they would have been able to get the DSL working seeing as older Lantiq chipsets do, there may simply not be enough developers interested.

Lantiq, is that intel
Thats a big thing to overlook, the modem

I used openwrt on my first adsl router a long time ago now and it was far better

Before you flashed your router what was it like for stats from the dsl port

I honestly can't remember if I even tried it as I only got it as it was a freebie for renewing my contract, everything was already setup in bridge mode.  I get the feeling it synced worse than the Home Hub 5a, but that might have been because I used the SNRm tweak.

I remember I hated the UI.
