New Small BT Cabinets Popping Up In My Area. G.Fast ???
« on: September 19, 2016, 02:39:14 PM »

I was driving by the other day and noticed a few of these cabinets in my local area, they are small and about 1M in height and have fresh asphalt going in to BT's manhole covers. I did a bit of digging around on my local planning authority website and found an application (http://tinyurl.com/z5jcznc) which confirms they are infact for BT. The title of said application is: "Installation Of 1 X Meter Pillar Equipment Cabinet Providing Power For A Next Generation Remote Fibre Broadband G Node Located Within A Junction Box. The Dimensions Of The Cabinet Are: Height 1100mm X Length 470mm X Depth 450mm". After more digging around i found the exact same cabinet on this website (http://tinyurl.com/gt9u3qq), it describes it as a "Power pillar to send power to G.fast nodes over copper pairs". Does this mean that G fast is possibly coming to my area in the near future? would be pretty chuffed if it twas ;D

Sounds very possible ............... the height (1 mtrs) would fit in with the spec for a Huwaei PP.

I guess that as they are installing a power pillar that the g.fast node is not located at a PCP/FTTC cab. I presume this must be some sort of trial.

I can confirm that the images, shown in the above application, are indeed of Huawei power feeding pillars (mini-cabinets).  :)

Interesting - it looks like BDUK funded g.fast.

OX33 1QX is not part of Openreach's 25,000 g.fast trial - in fact the whole of the Wheatley exchange is funded by BDUK and that cab is supposed to go live for FTTC by December 16...

There's an FTTRN trial big enough to be known as THE trial?

When I checked out the first FTTRN node, I discovered a power pillar like this. I'll have to dig out photos.

Thanks for all the replies. The nearest one of these is just down the road (50M ish) so hopefully I would be connected to the node when it is live. How would you order such a service when it is available ?

As it stands at the moment they are entirely separate, so it does not matter.
