A few question about the TD- W9970
« on: September 14, 2016, 11:00:29 PM »

Model : TD-W9970

Hardware Version : TD-W9970 v1 00000001

Firmware Version : 0.9.1 2.9 v0025.0 Build 160812 Rel.32537n

On my TD-W9970, I have the latest firmware, pre-installed from new.

Has anyone successfully set up & tested the VPN security of this TD-W9970 modem / router, if so,

1) How secure is the VPN, compared to installed versions of VPN on your PC / Devices.
1a) Can the VPN be used in conjunction with other VPN services / programs etc, IE: Avast SecureLineVPN

2) Can the connected clients be named (My ISP's cheaper entry level has got this facility)
3) Can the lease time be set to permanent. [ANSWERED]
4) What are the individual options 241 through 245, in the DHCP Condition Pool & what does each option do.
5) Can the MTU be changed, if so how. [ANSWERED]
6) How can I stop the Status page from auto refreshing every few seconds

TIA

Wow lots of questions......

Most people on this forum would be using this device as a modem only in front of a router (I did use it in front of my asus rtn66u with dd-wrt).

It is a budget modem/router with acceptable vdsl/adsl performance and I'm not sure anybody has tested/tried many of the things you are looking at to do with it.
Sorry I personally can not be of more help.

Ian

PS. What part of Wales are you in/from.

As a user of that modem/router in bridge mode, I thought the latest firmware  (going of the TP link web site) was 150831 ...

http://uk.tp-link.com/download/TD-W9970.html#Firmware

You can alter the MTU from the default 1480 to a max of 1492 (if I remember correctly bearing in mind it has been a while since I've ran it in router mode) from a tab in the WAN settings menu.

Hi kitzuser87430,

Thank you for your input, how did it perform in bridgemode, with your, asus rtn66u with dd-wrt.....??

The default MTU is lower than the MTU that my long line works best with, hence the reason to change it.
I like to have the connected clients named appropriatly, rather than by the name of the device eg: Apple-a123bcdee34 etc
I am interested in testing the VPN, but as I have never used one nor set one up, I am not to sure where to start.....
The main page after login, automaticaly refreshes every few seconds, which is very annoying.

I am currently in the South.....lol

Hi RayW,

Thank you I have now got a couple of questions answered, thank you.....

For reference, here is how I managed to get there.....

Lease Time

Network / WAN Settings / Edit the pppoa / Connection mode, Always on, (Lease Time) Idle time, set to required (0 meaning connection remains active at all times) / Save

MTU

Network / WAN Settings / Edit the pppoa / Advance (at the bottom, just above the Save / Back buttons) / MTU (Change to best result for your line) / Save

Whilst there I also changed to OpenDNS Servers 208.68.222.222 & 208.68.220.220, I never rely on ISP's Dns servers.....

The latest on the download page is "TD-W9970(EU)_V1_160812" from http://www.tp-link.com/en/download/TD-W9970.html#Firmware , It seems that the UK page has NOT been updated, as yet.....lol As at least 3 updates since "150831" (TD-W9970(EU)_V1_160413 / TD-W9970(EU)_V1_160705 & TD-W9970(EU)_V1_160812), why they havent updated the UK page, I do not know, but need to hurry up & catch up.....lol
