MTU on TalkTalk Fibre when using modem in bridge mode
« on: September 14, 2016, 08:14:12 PM »

I've got the Huawei HG612 connected today, in bridge mode, connected to a TP-LINK Archer C7 running OpenWRT.

With the MTU on the C7 set to 1500, the largest packet without fragmentation I can send is 1472 bytes.

TalkTalk uses IPoE and so the overhead of PPPoE does not apply. There is a 4 byte overhead added by Openreach to each packet (http://www.btplc.com/sinet/SINs/pdf/498v7p1.pdf) too.

What should my MTU be set to; Is 1500 correct?

What happens if you set the MTU on the router to 1534 then run this test?  http://www.tp-link.us/article/?faqid=190

ICMP has a 28 byte overhead. The packet size you specify doesn't include this. You have a 1500 byte MTU.

Would just set the modem to 1492 and on the PC side to 1492 the overhead will take this to a MTU setting of 1500 though modems will complain in its logs the MTU could not be set to 1500,

Yet when I look at my ISP modem settings it states that the MTU should be set at 1492

TalkTalk don't use PPP for their own FTTC subscribers so no need for the extra 8 bytes of headroom. Per my post above OP has an MTU of 1500 which is correct for TalkTalk Fibre.
