Jeremy Corbyn Pledges £25bn for National UK FTTP Broadband and Mobile

Quote
The United Kingdom’s economy may be hovering just above recession but that doesn’t seem to be a problem for the Labour Party’s embattled leader, Jeremy Corbyn. He has today outlined a new “Digital Democracy Manifesto” that reveals more about his plans to upgrade national broadband and mobile connectivity.

Earlier this month Corbyn launched the opening salvo in his plan to improve UK Internet connectivity / national infrastructure by pledging to invest and lend £500 billion over a 10 year period, part of which would be used to roll-out “high speed broadband” so that the United Kingdom can “stop languishing behind Bulgaria and Romania”.

Can't be doing with that wet-fish, personally.

Whoever it was though, I detest comparisons with other countries. It's akin to BTOR's ridiculous stat-based managing ......... zoom in on one particular aspect of a country (Broadband) whilst overlooking all other measures that determine whether a country is 'great' or not ??

I don't hear much on the news of people flocking to Romania or Bulgaria because they have great broadband ?? Smoke and mirrors = sh1te.

I hear lots about Japan's broadband. I bet they're using copper too, because it's an amazing technology ::)

In all seriousness though, FTTC isn't that bad. It's made quite an improvement to a lot of people.

He and Owen Smith seem to be having a competition to work out who can spend more of our money. I entirely agree more public investment is required. I entirely disagree that this is an appropriate use of it given the extensive private sector involvement.

Especially concerning given that the plan to fund it is at least partly to asset strip the Bank of England.

We should have a mixed economy, not one where the state competes with the private sector using its basically limitless ability to raise money.

I would support a state funder FTTP rollout, of course it has to be done right tho.

e.g. a rollout could be state funded but then sold to private companies over time, the sale would at the least have to be break even.

With that said there is bigger problems the UK has to deal with right now than fibre broadband, such as a NHS close to collapse, social care services, under funded councils, lack of affordable housing and more.  These for me would all be higher priority to address than broadband.

My thoughts on the idea would be that the public finance is used to lay dark fibre, which the government maintains and rents out to ISPs and wholesalers, who in turn install their own equipment to light it. Essentially, this could be done by running dark fibre from the existing head-end exchanges to the distribution points, and then in the head-end exchange, the ISP simply installs their own OTP equipment. Any thoughts on this? It removes a lot of the government owned aspect and ensures that there is still competition in the market.

I agree with Chrysalis and NEXUS2345 both. I need the NHS more than a decent internet connection! (Mind you, I'm probably banned from my local hospital now for being a troublemaker. :-( )

I would go a step back and say public finance is used to provide ducting which the private sector can then compete to use.
