thanks John.  What combos provide good stats and decent wifi coverage?

I will suggest that you take a look at the Combined VDSL2 Modem Routers thread and follow the links therein, when appropriate.

For good statistics "harvesting" you really need a modem/router that uses a Broadcom chipset. Perhaps consider one of the Billion or ZyXEL devices so listed.

I enabled dual WAN and successfully used the ECI modem on port 1 with the Asus as a router for a while.  IP profile speeds were no better in fact they were lower.  I've gone back to old set-up using the Asus as modem and a router and disabled the Dual WAN except now port #1 no longer receives an internet connection.  I should have noted the original settings  :( I've tried a few things but had no luck and don't want to upset the DLM gods by resetting the router with each attempt.  Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.  Thanks

Dual WAN should never have been enabled. I did say "select Dual WAN NO." though the actual setting is "off".
When i reverted back to DSL from LAN port 1, it just worked again.
I could only suggest restoring factory settings, and manually tweaking it again.
This is found in Administration > Restore/Save/Upload Setting > Factory default - Click Restore
I've had to do this nearly every time I've upgraded the firmware or some setting has broken

thanks John after a factory reset I realised that the lack of internet access on port #1 lay with the fact that I'd forgotten that a few weeks ago I'd enabled IPTV to get BT Sports working on a YouView box.  It was enabled on port #1 but after messing around with different routers/modems the LAN cables went back into different port numbers.  So presumably if you enable IPTV on a particular LAN port then that port can no longer be used for regular internet access?

in the iptv section you don't need to specify an STB Lan port. If you do it stops that port working, as you've seen.
some notes I saved ages ago to get multicast streaming working..
   In WAN ->  PPPoE vlan id 101
   In LAN -> IPTV,
-          Don't set STB LAN port
-          Leave  Remove VLAN tag from DSL WAN unchecked
-          Use DHCP routes   -    RFC3442 & Microsoft,
-          Enable multicast routing (IGMP Proxy)    -     Enable,
-          Enable efficient multicast forwarding (IGMP Snooping)    -    Enable
-          UDP Proxy (Udpxy)    -    0
  In Wireless -> Professional
-          Enable IGMP Snooping    -     Enable
-          Multicast Rate(Mbps)    -    Auto

IPTV then works on any LAN port, and also over wireless if you have your Youview/BT UHD box connected to a wireless AP (I use a TP-LINK TL-WA860RE with my Youview box).
