Huawei HG612 3B - can't access GUI
« on: August 12, 2016, 07:16:26 PM »

Hi All,

I just bought off ebay a HG612 3B, set up my NIC with 192.168.1.100, plugged an ethernet cable in LAN2 port and visited 192.168.1.1.  The browser times out after a while and I get a 404 ...

I have not yet connected the RJ11 from the BT faceplate to the modem.

Am I doing something wrong?  Why can't I browse to the admin GUI of the modem?

I just ran nmap and got this:

Code: [Select]
PORT    STATE    SERVICE REASON       VERSION
80/tcp  filtered http    no-response
443/tcp closed   https   conn-refused

Then I pressed the reset button while powering up and this time I received the "Update Software" page, but I do not have the latest firmware to flash it with.  Can you please suggest what is available/suitable for this purpose today and where I could get it?

Here is the link to the needed firmware: http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,14262.0.html
Make sure to choose the B030SP08 folder on the repository then get the one ending with 'webgui'.

Thanks NEXUS2345!  I flashed it and am able to access it now.  Is the native firmware completely locked now?  Not even offering a web GUI?  How are users meant to configure it   ???

You must have flashed the HG612 with the non GUI firmware, re-flash with bcm96368MVWG_fs_kernel_HG612V100R001C01B030SP08_webgui-1407000358

access the HG612 GUI by using 192.168.1.1 if still no access then you need change the DHCP settings on the router for example router is 192.168.1.254 and HG612 modem is 192.168.1.1 so DHCP settings should be Start IP Address 192.168.1.2 End IP Address 192.168.1.253

@Newtron, he flashed the correct firmware, he was simply asking if they are always locked down.
@Mick the HG612 was originally shipped locked into bridge mode on VDSL, so that it would then be connected to an ISP supplied router for the actual connection to the ISP.

I'm still on ADSL2+ and will be for a while until FTTC becomes cheaper, or FTTP becomes available where I live at a reasonable price.  I didn't know this modem is locked up like this, I assumed that the end user would always be able to log in and configure it.  With the Openreach/BT logo on it I can understand why they may ship it locked.  Fewer calls to their support desk.   :)

I'll plug it in now to compare it with the performance of my HGV2700 ...

Well, initial impressions are good!  It sync'ed around 1Mb/s higher.  Let's see if it can hold the line better than the HGV2700 2WIRE managed to do.

The 2WIRE had a diagnostics page where previous resync' history was displayed with the different values at the time.  Is there something similar with this modem?

No....Either run dslstats or hg612 modem stats http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/board,46.0.html

These programs both work with ADSL2+ and  provide loads of information and stats.

DSLstats runs on Linux32, Linux64 and Raspberry Pi, as well as Windows.

Thank you for letting me know Eric, it's been some time since I used DSLstats and I seem to recall it was a MSWindows executable back then.

Meanwhile, I ran a VM with MSWindows to test the hg612 modem stats, but the 'Connection Stats' page isn't showing anything yet.  I may have to wait for a while - I just set the 'Snapshot Settings' interval to 1 hour.

Regarding DSLstats, could I run this on a headless server, or is it a desktop only application?  I don't run a PC with a desktop 24-7.

You could run a vnc server on a headless server, then leave DSLstats running in the vnc server.

Thanks ejs, there's no X-server running on the headless server.  SSH access only, but can run a webserver, or fetch files from it as and when I need to.

Does the HG612 3B have snmp?  From a cursory look at the fs I didn't find anything.

The simple solution is to get a Raspberry Pi and install DSLstats on that. Once it's set up it doesn't need a monitor to be connected.
