Seasonal variation
« on: August 01, 2016, 05:29:26 PM »

Does your xDSL copper connection (especially a long line) show a variation in SNRM or error rate or sync speeds at different times of the year?

And is summer better than winter, or the reverse?

I've plotted graphs of line rate and SNRM for 2014 and 2015, each on one graph. I think the results are fairly meaningless. If there was any seasonal variation, it's dwarfed by other events. A year is a long time, a lot of things can happen, and I suppose everything gradually degrades over time.

@ejs - What kind of a line do you have, ejs?

I've noticed that the attenuation tends to increase in hot weather - so on FTTC - it's gone up from 16.1 to 16.6 in the recent hot weather. I imagine this has an impact on sync speeds.

Summer is better for this long line as the Sun never really sets to far below the horizon so the atmospheric RFI has a much shorter period from 8pm to 1pm were the SNRM drops to it's lowest point with CRC's and large gaps of tones going missing around 7232 Khz

In the winter the RFI has much longer duration 5pm to 4am as the Sun is way below the horizon at that time of year.

So yeap I do get Seasonal variation and also the Daily variations that effects SNRM and TONES with more errors and attenuation lowers a wee bit in the winter 0.6dB :(

ADSL2

US Connection Rate:     854     DS Connection Rate:     3622
DS Line Attenuation:    58.7    DS Margin:              3.1
US Line Attenuation:    37.1    US Margin:              5.5

It used to be slightly faster, but an extra 2 dB of noise suddenly appeared on July 22 and has been almost continually present ever since. Any seasonal variation is insignificant compared to other stuff happening for this line.
