High fault volumes .........
« on: July 21, 2016, 05:48:39 PM »

The lightning storms have wreaked havoc .......... please bear with us, especially in the affected areas. Plus, as manpower is realigned to help the worst affected areas, there is bound to be a slight knock-on effect in other areas. See message below from Roddy.

As many of you will know from first-hand experience, we’ve seen a significant number of lightning strikes in the past few days. And it’s fair to say that the 36,000 strikes have had an impact on our customers.

This morning we woke up to a repair workstack of <deleted for business sensitivity>, some 3,000 more than we had expected. We anticipate the number of out of service customers will increase with faults and damage reports coming in throughout today. To put this into perspective, North East Scotland saw three and a half days’ worth of fault reports hit them on one day, yesterday.

It is in situations like this that we show what we are made of and we will focus on getting our customers reconnected quickly. For many of you, this will mean the suspension of investment work, postponed training or delayed team meetings. While unfortunate, I know that you will want to put our customers first.

I would also like to ask for your help in terms of extra overtime volunteers while we work through this. The areas in real need of support are Scotland, the North West and the North East. While skills required are specific to each location, we will endeavour to make use of as many volunteers as we can.

Additionally, we need volunteers to go on lodge to help accelerate our recovery. Again, the key areas that need help are North East Scotland, Highlands & Islands, Cumbria, North Wales, Central, South East & South West Scotland, and Swansea & West Wales. If you are able to help, please get in touch with your OEM or Field Dynamics team.

I appreciate how hard you are all working to connect our customers, thank you.

Thank you for making that Openreach communique available for our viewing. I was wondering how the network infrastructure was standing up to the summer storms.

For those of us who are not directly involved in the day to day affairs of Openreach, I wonder if you would be able to tell us how Roddy fits into the hierarchy, please?  :-\

Fibre doesn't conduct electricity so a strike would be a single repair, not many as the current dispersed around.
