The internet has only been around in the UK since 1996.

I joined Demon for dial-up internet access from home in 1994 (the original tenner a month deal), but I'd had access via work since 1991, and used it to download (in a weird fashion) the first version of Linux.

My very first forays into the internet actually came at university with the establishment of JaNet in 1984. There might have been some serious use, including email, but the most memorable part was getting access to a remote MUD game in Essex.

All inside the UK.

I don't think I was pioneering in any sense, either.

Am I just cynical or does a guaranteed 10 MB/sec imply 15 nominal to allow for the crosstalk from everyone else's BB ?

I think that the only aspect that will be mandatory is that someone has to provide it if you ask and are willing to pay.

ADSL will still be available at sub-10Mbps speeds, and usable by those who still don't wish to pay more.

I know that, but for customers (which is what this thread is about) the internet became available in 1996!

That's incorrect. Web browsers were available in Windows 95, released in 1995. The WWW runs on top of the Internet.

That's strange then, I've only heard of dial up being invented in 1996!

William, the internet is not restricted to WWW and browsers. One major predecessor to WWW was Gopher
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gopher_(protocol)#Origins

The underlying protocols that support the internet as we know it today, TCP/IP, came out in 1982. And that was IP version 4.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_protocol_suite#History

Pipex was the first UK ISP, in 1991. Though you probably needed to use leased lines to connect to them at 64kbps.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pipex#History

One of their first customers was Demon Internet. They were the first ISP that made it easy to access via dial-up, starting 1992.

BT Internet was founded in 1996 but some of the UK cable companies were offering their residential customers unmetered calls to ISPs (who also on their networks) by 1992.

The internet has only been around in the UK since 1996.

Around this time it was becoming easier to access for consumers using Dial up - but as others have said it's been around a long time before that!

That's strange then, I've only heard of dial up being invented in 1996!

In 1995 I had something similar to the image below (USR Sportster 28k) which used to plug into the side (and stick out) of my laptop.  What you see is only part of it, as I also had to have an adapter for the laptop.   Most modems prior to 1996 were external modems and I got my first PC internal (33k) modem card in March 1996 as a birthday present from my brother.

My first ISP was U-net,  a North West Company whom I believe started providing Internet access in 1994, but some others which were also around previously were Pipex & Demon.  U-Net also had direct access to JaNET which has been around since the early '70's.
U-Net used to charge £12 per month for 'up to' 56 kbps connectivity then you paid 10p per min peak and 1p per min off peak for each and every minute you used the Internet.  It was very easy to rack up phone bills of £100 per month if you weren't careful.  U-net was later taken over by VIA networks who failed to keep abreast of DSL technology.  A few of their staff later ended up at Zen.

My first 300baud modem used with a BBC model B to connect to a bulletin board in circa 1986/87.

Not the actual modem, this picture was taken at the Bletchley Park computer museum.  :)
