Today I decided to try the VMG 8924 B10A again on it's own on firmware v14. I switched off bit swapping and although my FEC's are very high the SNR seems stable and errors whilst a little higher are still at reasonable levels.
Seems the 8924 marks bits as unusable and slowly lowers the SNR over time if bit swapping is on.

I had the same issue.
DSL driver after v7 was changed and all fw had the same issue after v7.
They have released v15 now, with a new dsl driver - maybe worth a try.

A little too late for me I've just jumped ship from the disaster that is PlusNet to join Virgin Media, I have any amount of VDSL modem/routers I no longer need so may put them on a well know auction site :P
