There is simple test you can perform remove the SSFP to expose the test socket on the NTE5a use one of those micro filters and connect this to the test socket and then look at the stats

That would rule out the SSFP but the NTE5/A would still be "in circuit". If an induced HV spike has caused any damage, it would likely be to the 1.8 microfarad capacitor / 470 kohm series connected shunt across the pair -- especially as the more recent NTE5s do not have the over-voltage protection device across the pair (nor the good earth, to which both legs of the pair should be clamped when the protection device is triggered).

Fully in agreement with b*cat's suggestions.

Some years ago I suddenly started suffering an incredible rate of CRC errors, rendering the broadband almost unusable, but telephony was fine. As it happened (don't ask!) there were 'U' links before the master socket, and all was fine testing from there.

Changed the master socket and all was well. There had been a close strike about a week before, but the socket showed no sign of damage.

Before b*cat asks - sorry, I can't remember whether the old socket showed any abnormalities on a multimeter after removal.

I would not dream of doing so! Although it would have been interesting to know what sort of insulation resistance was reported with an Ohmmeter 18C (at 500V DC) connected to the A & B terminals.  ;)
