Are we close to having ARM computers given away with boxes of cornflakes? Probably.  :o

An Orange Pi PC arrived today from China, ordered on AliExpress on the 30th May(TopCashback give 5% discount) - be warned that the seller actually puts the real purchase price on the customs declaration. I didn't get any fees but larger orders might incur import VAT and the truly laughable Royal Mail handling fee(£8).  :-\

Spent some time faffing around with it last night, it has a USB connector which can't be used for power so(after seeing a blog post) I soldered a couple of pins together so it could be used(I was too cheap to buy a power jack). Then had some trouble getting the distro to work(OrangePI-PC_Ubuntu_Vivid_Mate.img) - properly valid distro images give a red led(plus ethernet lights), invalid have no red light. Then had some trouble getting the HDMI to work, ended up using the script.bin.OPI-2_1080p50_hdmi option from scriptbin_kernel.tar.gz - that was the only option I could find that gave me a display on my HD TV and my 1920x1200 Hanns.G monitor.

The Raspberry Pi is better in terms of support and the community behind it. Far less painful. The Diet-pi is a good lightweight distro and has some very useful optimised software. http://dietpi.com

As I explained in a previous post, mine was $15 delivered from AliExpress(about £10) - with no handling fee. If people place orders of higher values(over £15) they may be likely to incur import VAT and a handling fee.

Hey man I'm not raining on your parade. Just an observation. Variety is the spice of life.

You implied there was an additional £8 charge, so obviously since I had already stated there wasn't, I'm going to correct you - it has nothing to do with "my parade" I simply ordered a £10 computer(prompted by the EEV Blog review) to play around with - if the company went bust tomorrow it would be of zero consequence to me. You seem to be more invested in this topic than me ... ::)
