Virgin FTTP
« on: January 23, 2017, 05:24:16 PM »

Hi all'

I haven't posted for some time so forgive me if this is on the wrong board.   I currently get BT infinity up to 75mb, of which i get 45mb.  It is relatively stable and only drops out about twice a week but with anytime phone calls and bt tv costs around £65 a month.

Virgin are currently laying fibre in our area and the guys laying it assure me it is fibre to the property and not coax from the cabinet.  They have placed cabinets with the dslam on just about every street on our estate.  Now apparently I can get the tv package and up to 200mb with free weekend calls for £55 for 1 year then £74.  What I would like to know from those more knowledgeable than I is,  is Virgin FTTP reliable and will I get reasonable speeds at all times ie over 150mb, or will I get hamstrung by contention ratios.  Also do they block any sites that BT wouldn't (no not porn :))

Yes and yes. Should be very good service and will be reliable as all fibre.

A friend has had Virgin Fibre for a some time and is delighted with it, especially as he was otherwise limited to very poor ADSL / VDSL speeds (around 5 Mb/s download).
I have not heard him complain about the upload speed (10 Mb/s?) or contention that some complain about.

Long ago I was with NTL (in VF's family tree). After some teething problems, resolved when I managed to speak to somebody who understood that you could have more than one computer at home, their technical service was fine. I left them in a fit of rage with their administrative ineptitude and arrogance, for BT ISDN.

Thank you both for your replies.  I think I'm pretty much sold anyway but just wanted some advice.  Anyway if it doesn't work out I can always change back the BT at the end of the contract.
