I think it depends on the router + firmware in use.
ATM Im using a voyager 2100 on which "disconnect" only stops the PPP session as you say.
However on some other routers (such as the SAR110/ Voyager 205 etc) you actually stop "the loop".
If I do this on my SAR110, then the sync light actually goes out too.
Ive no idea though which routers do what.
