Author Topic: moving house and making the best of 6km from wigmore exchange  (Read 1870 times)

hi

The only slight downside to a move to a country cottage would appear to be being 6km from the exchange and an estimated speed of 1 mega bit per second. I know the postcode but not the phone number, yet. I did carry out a speedtest whilst there to confirm the estimate (actually it was 1.5 mbps).

Two main questions:

1. how to get the best out of the current situation in terms of isp and kit (currently with zen using their technicolor tg589vn 3 on fibre)?

2. are the cavalry coming in any way shape or form?

Are these the right questions...

Thanks

Normal precautions really, remove extension wiring if possible, use filtered faceplate, short screened DSL cable.   Weaver on this forum recommends the D-Link DSL-320-Z1 modem for his lines, which are a little longer than yours.

Our place has a 1.0meg estimate, at 5300m and 54.5dB.  Like you we're on a 20CN exchange.  When we first moved in the synch speed was something like 1.7meg, removing extension wiring etc got us to our current speed which has been just over 4meg for the last few years.

Thanks very much. Good to know there's some possible improvement available for now.

On the future...

The government is planning to implement a minimum 10MB Universal Service Obligation but that is unlikely to come into force until around 2020.

You could always look at a Satellite system. If nothing else you can think how much you are saving with a terrestrial system !!!!!  :)
