Openreach Fibre Index - Winter Update
« on: April 22, 2016, 12:39:28 PM »

Previous Update: Autumn 2015 Update

The Openreach Fibre Index has again received a quiet update for Winter 2015-16, showing the average usage has increased from 210GB to 230GB, plus a 20% increase over the Christmas period.

The download:upload ratio is quoted as 7:1, suggesting that, for the average line, perhaps the chosen bandplan (998ADE17) allocates too much spectrum for upstream use.

Perhaps BT would be well advised to nab the tones for 5Mbps, even 8Mbps, off a 20Mbps upstream, and re-utilise it on the downstream. It could mean a 10% improvement in download speeds, with no need to deploy G.INP or vectoring. Controversial?  >:D

A shame, however, that what works for the average line wouldn't allow for higher upstream speeds for the people who actually needed it.

Edit: Fixed link. Ta.

Thanks for the update.

It's good to see the stats and how things are progressing.

Roll on FTTP as reasonable prices please!

Define reasonable prices and the performance levels you have in mind :)

The actual article isn't especially surprising. Openreach are unlikely to come under backhaul pressure for a while still.

G.fast I believe remains on schedule for 2017, which gives VM plenty of time to ready announcement spoilers.

For example in Singapore: http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,17577.0.html

or something like https://hyperoptic.com/ but on a widespread scale.

Tell BT that they only need to upgrade areas they deem commercially viable and don't need to LLU and I imagine that you would get more FTTP..

Wasn't aware BT were obligated to upgrade everywhere, or that they had to LLU the FTTP?

Unbundling PON is quite a trick.

or something like https://hyperoptic.com/ but on a widespread scale.

Those are both FTTB solutions and the Singaporean one is supported by public funding.

They don't translate well to deployments outside of MDUs but, certainly, in areas where there's decent quality ducting in the ground such as new builds from the past 10 years or so the sums could work.

The business case completely hits the skids, however, if there's an existing copper network to milk. With than in mind enhanced copper is all most are going to get.

In my opinion, I think milking the existing infrastructure as long as possible is the best way to earn profit.

And made worse if the copper network has to be kept in place for LLU - which I think is the point being made earlier, rather than suggesting LLU of a PON.

On a technical sidenote, couldn't PON's be unbundled with some form of WDM?
