VMG1312-B10D - any good?
« on: April 22, 2016, 11:25:11 AM »

Just signed up for VDSL broadband with Zen, they sent me a Zyxel VMG1312-B10D instead of the Openreach Modem I expected (didn't know BT canned them).

Cracked it open, has a Broadcom chipset. As you can see though it's not very rackmount friendly. Wondering if firstly anyone's got any opinion on whether it's any good? And secondly if anyone can recommend a flat VDSL modem - BT Openreach one on eBay? Vigor 130?

Line is connected to a Huawei 288 cabinet.

Hi Leonroy and welcome to the forums :)

Thanks for the images - noted is the BCM63381UK chipset.

In which case I would expect DSL performance to be akin to the TD-W9970.  The BCM63381 is designed for budget based modems (ie those with 10/100 & wireless N) rather than anything spectacular, but does seem to perform very well for the money.

Based on the fact that you are on a Huawei cabinet, if it was me I'd stick to a BCM based modem.
HG612's are well liked by many members of this community, bear in mind you would still need a router to use with it.

Because you are looking for a flat modem, perhaps one of the Billions ...  or the ZyXEL SBG3300-N.
What is your budget?

The SBG3300 is a bit old hat now as it was one of the very first combined vdsl modems, but those who have had one are very pleased with them and I dont think Ive heard anyone say anything bad about them.
TBH it had always been the one that I wanted one myself, but at £170,  it was just out of my price range.  However I noticed the other day that ebuyer had them for sale at about £110.   Dont know if there's anywhere else got them on sale haven't checked.

Vigor 130?

Hmmmm..
Despite Drayteks previous good reputation, unfortunately its not so good for a lot of their modem/routers when it comes to VDSL.
Perhaps someone else is best commenting, but from what Ive seen, far more have been disappointed with the various Vigors than Ive seen happy.

Some one else may offer some alternative suggestions.

Hi kitz thanks - seems like a forum with some very informative folk :)

Based on your suggestion I hopped on ebay and waited for a reasonably priced HG612 to come up. Picked it up for not too much. Planning on hooking it up to a pfSense router which is just rock solid, has multi WAN, all web config and is open source and free. I highly recommended the software.

It's a real pity BT are discontinuing their Openreach modems but I guess they have other priorities now that VDSL has gone mainstream.

Thanks for the tip on the Draytek, especially since the Vigor 130 comes in at an eye watering £75 - it seems like the only game in town for a pure modem solution.

Just an update with the stats this little thing puts out. Quite a lot of useful info.

What's interesting is the Attainable Net Data Rate at 37.314 Mbps / 115.270 Mbps. Admittedly I'm no more than 50M from the cabinet but it would be nice to get that speed!

I notice that the device is for sale  http://www.shop.bt.com/products/zyxel-vmg1312-b10d-wireless-n-vdsl2-4-port-gateway-with-usb-vmg1312-b10d-eu02v1f-BW64.html  Quite cheap too.

Your line looks much too good to evaluate it but it would be interesting to know if the full download speed gets through the ethernet ports and how good the wireless side is.  In the matching chipset TP-link 9970 the ethernet seems to struggle above above about 60Mb/s and the wifi has poor range.

Presumably using the standard Zyxel GUI then.   That is one thing I do like about Zyxel in that they still allow full telnet access and have a fairly decent GUI (even if it is sometimes buggy.)

It looks practically the same as info available from the GUI in the VMG8324/8924 and SBG3300n so should therefore work with both DSLstats and HG612modem stats.

For £46, this modem could be an excellent alternative to the HG612.  :)

I'll check. Fingers crossed it can saturate the Ethernet ports at least otherwise it's pretty useless if WAN syncs at 80Mbps but it only manages 60Mbps over the LAN!

For £46, this modem could be an excellent alternative to the HG612.  :)

Indeed, here's a good article on running it in bridge mode:
https://support.zen.co.uk/kb/Knowledgebase/ZyXEL-VMG1312-VMG8924-Bridge-Mode

Spoke with Zen earlier and they said they found it worked better than the VMG1312-B10A hence why they use it as their default router.

Interesting - I thought that the 802.1q setting was supposed to be 2 for Openreach FTTC and not 0 as the guide suggests - unless it should be different in router mode vs. Bridge mode.

801.q is the VLAN (101), 801.p is the priority (2)

Sorry, yes, got it the wrong way round - what I meant was 801p is shown as 0 in Zen's quide rather than 2. Does it make any difference?

I think 2 and zero are actually the same priority. I was looking at that just recently as someone else asked.

Just ran a few tests.

VMG1312-B10D

WiFi
link speed: 144Mbps
speedtest result: 8ms latency / 73.93Mbps down / 19.43Mbps up

Ethernet
link speed: 100Mbps
speedtest result: 8ms latency / 74.93Mbps down / 19.02Mbps up

BT Openreach ECI modem

speedtest result: 6ms latency / 74.51Mbps down / 18.66Mbps up

With the Openreach modem I'm running a phone extension cable down to the cellar where the pfSense router sits so that could be a contributing factor to the slightly lower speeds (ran test 5 times for each scenario to different hosts).

I've bought one of these VMG1312-B10D models from Ballicom this week - £47 and free delivery.
https://www.ballicom.co.uk/zyxel-vmg1312-b10d-eu02v1f-.p1205212.html

I put it on test this morning and was pleased with the VDSL performance; very slightly higher downstream than my usual 8800NL and very slightly lower upstream. During the 4 hour test, error rates were almost zero. Very acceptable indeed.
It was reasonably easy to set up, and the GUI is nice, I didn't test the wifi as I don't use it.

BUT....I had no joy trying to monitor its stats (other than from the GUI).  Its DSL stats page is 'hidden' and I can't yet find its URL (work in progress)  nor can I get stats from it via telnet. Telnet does function, but once in its shell, I find that the usual adsl etc command won't apparently run under 'admin' - I see it has root and supervisor accounts in the passwd file, but I can't determine what their passwords are. (I'm not giving up tho, and will continue to experiment). So that rules out the usual methods. I tried SNMP to harvest the stats, but had no luck that way either - I could get traffic transfer details, but not SNRM.

Re my last.....

Earlier I was unable to get adslctl or xdslctl to run successfully whilst telnet'ed in as 'admin'.
I just now created a new user and set it to be in the 'admin' group. Retried telnet access and running xdslctl  and it now works!
Retried telnet as 'admin' and it too works. I'll schedule another in-service test tomorrow and give DSLstats a run with it.
