Another router advice question ... sorry
« on: April 16, 2016, 12:49:20 PM »

I would like to pick the brains of the forum members.

I have been looking to upgrade my router for a while, I currently use the Billion 8800NL, but I would like something with better wireless performance and built in VPN (if possible).

I purchased one of the first batch of Billion 8900AX-2400 however it arrived in fairly poor cosmetic condition so I returned it to Broadband Buyer.

The 8900AX-2400 is proving difficult to get hold of and Broadband Buyer are so upset that I returned the item (the next working day) that they refuse to supply.

Amazon are taking orders for the 8900AX-1600 so I am considering this model along with the TP-LINK VR2600.

According to TP-LINK support like other TP-LINK models the VR-2600 does not support telnet so logging my line stats with DSLstats is not going to be possible, also no VPN server, but the parental controls might be more flexible than those on the Billion.

I also have HG612 3B that I purchased some time ago that I could unlock for logging and use the 8900AX-1600 or TP-LINK VR2600 in router only mode.

Any thoughts or advise gratefully received.

You could use the Huawei HG612 or the Billion 8800NL as a modem and then choose a router that gives the options you want. I think Asus and Draytek offer better wifi and built-in VPN.

If I understand the specifications correctly the TP-LINK VR2600 also supports profile 30, is that worth taking into consideration?

You could put the 8800nl in bridge mode and consider an asus rt-ac87u. I have this setup. Vpn works and the 5ghz wifi has been excellent exceeding my performance concerns as it reaches the top of the house which really surprised me
