Openreach Will No Longer Provide a VDSL2 Modem
« on: March 30, 2016, 08:27:00 PM »

CP changes on VDSL modems

From Thursday 31 March, CPs will no longer place provision orders that require a VDSL modem on IFTTC2 tasks. Instead, they’ll be advised to order a ‘PCP Only’ install or a Managed Engineer install with CP-provided device.

...  and also just as the ECI modems are coming back in favour for their apparent speed increase for eci cabs

The silly thing is though that you have ebay retailers selling unlocked modems for £85 plus - gone are the days when you could pick one up for a tenner.
I cannot understand the mentality.  For example there's currently a [locked] ECI going for £65 +£3.60 P&P.    Who in their right minds would pay that when you can pick up say a brand spanking new TD-W9970 all-in-one unit for about £35!    Its crazy.

I found it cheaper to search for terms like BT Router and Openreach box instead of the actual modem names I got my HG612 in January for £24.6 most were £40 plus back then.

its firmware supports a bridge mode, so once you turn the wireless off you effectively have a direct replacement for an existing VDSL2 modem.

That seems vague, does it have a bridge on/off or are they saying if you turn wifi off they believe it to run like bridge mode?

Also TBB says it has a broadcom chipset but on here it is said its an ECI?

I think it has the standard TPLink setup that includes bridge.

Here it says Broadcom http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/tplink_TD-W9970_review.htm

I wonder when, and who will be making the G.fast modems. Maybe this is why they are switching making HG612 modems.

From my (limited) understanding, when a line gets turned on to G.fast we'll need a different modem?

Will BT have to bring out HH6 to be G.fast compatable or can the firmware be upgraded?

yes as g.fast isnt vdsl.  Newer DSL protocol.

New modems will be needed.

Regarding the tplink I have clearly got myself confused sorry, I thought there was an ECI version.

It will still be supported by Openreach for another year - after that it's down to your ISP to replace it if necessary.

Does that apply under a warranty like period or is that indefinitely?

I wonder how this will work. When I told BT my HH5 broke instead of replacing it they wanted me to buy a new one.. smh
