Best when to disconnect and reconnection modem?
« on: March 25, 2016, 09:30:33 AM »

I'm going to swap out my modem early next week (to one with an updated firmware on).

I'm wondering what's the best way to disconnect and reconnection it.

Do I just pull the plug out of the modem first? or do I disconnect the dsl cable first then pull the plug?

As for plugging back in, do I connect the dsl cable in, then push the plug in? or do I push the plug in, let the modem power up, then connect the dsl cable?

Also, seen as I'm only going to be doing this once, do I need to wait for the 30 minutes before reconnecting?

I turn power off, disconnect all cables, swap over and reconnect then power on.

I never bother waiting, but some recommend waiting 15 minutes. If only doing it the once it won't be a problem not waiting.

Thanks Ronski,

I thought it was about time I upgrade the firmware stuff as for some reason my modem resynced yesterday. First time interleaving went on with this line since I had work done on the line ages ago. So no time like the present etc.

Hi

If I'm using a Broadcom based modem with telnet I log in and issue
Code: [Select]
xdslctl connection --downNot sure if it makes any difference or not but it feels better than just turning off the power  ;D

If turning off the power the modem is suppose to issue a 'dying gasp' to indicate it is a power outage, so the modem the other end shouldn't be unduly worried or try to change profiles.

Regards

@philipD - our leader, Kitz, believes that BT does not heed dying gasps, it just treats them as nothing. Half an hour of being turned off will definitely tell BT that you are off.

The "half hour" is actually 15 mins minimum, the period of being off just has to straddle two 15 min boundaries, where the 15 min boundaries start at midnight.

See Kitz' description of DLM.
