Intermittent 'Morse Code'
« on: March 28, 2008, 10:26:29 AM »

I don't really know where to put this query, but every now and again I get a kind of morse code type noise coming through my speakers, only for a few seconds and quite intermittently.  It's a bit reminiscent of some of the odd noises you used to get on dialup, so what I'm asking is anyone might know what's causing this to happen.

It's not a biggie, but as ever it's got me curious.

Shouldn't your thread be entitled: . . . - - - . . . ;)

It's possibly interference from hard drive etc...

You may be able to reduce it by going to your playback sound mixer and muting everything you don't want to hear through the speakers, like Microphone, Line input, CD input (as CD audio is normally digitally extracted by CD player apps now) - basically mute everything except the Wave and Synth outputs and see if the interference sound goes away at all?

Well, I've been into volume control and muted everything except for wave & midi - is this what you meant (CD's still play :) ).  Oh and I don't have a mic of any description that could be the possible cause of audio feedback.

Yeah, that's what I meant :)

Normally the mic input will have extra gain applied to make it more sensitive (as microphones require this), so this input is normally more susceptible to interference, therefore muting it often helps, along with others that you don't use.

Is it any better?

Is your mobile phone in your pocket or close by.

The noise is caused when your phone is scanning for a new signal.

To prove it is that, sit near your computer and send a text. You will get the 'morse code' bips when it contacts the nearest antenna.
It is not your computer that is picking it up, just the speakers. I used to get it occasionally in the car when the cell phone was checking for a new mast.

I think you may have hit the nail on the head there Dave!!

I was thinking of more of a high-pitched interference noise I've heard when doing audio production on PCs - but thinking about it, that is with the volume really high, when I'm listening to get the cleanest signal.

I just tried to record some noise from my mobile to attach to this thread, but my computer / speakers don't seem to be picking it up AT ALL, which is a bit odd!

That's a good point Dave, my mobie is usually on my PC desk in front of me.

Try ring your mobile from your landline. You'll hear the interference before the phone actually rings.

I tried that Astral, I certainly heard the same interference down the landline receiver

My mobile phone was playing havoc with my mouse pointer (it would suddenly jump to a random location). Once that was suggested I keep the mobile well away and I've had no more problems.

So that's what causes it. I have that trouble with my work laptop. IT dept sent me a fix but it didn't work. I shall try keeping the mobile off the desk & see what happens.

You beat me to it.

My mobile phone was playing havoc with my mouse pointer (it would suddenly jump to a random location).

Mine does that from time-to-time, but mainly when it's on charge, even though it's not very close to the PC.

Some years ago the boss in my office used to think that I was such a good person because I used to ignore most of my incoming mobile phone calls.

Little did he know the reason why

I'm now keeping my mobie away from the PC desk, and not had it happen since. :)

WOW!
The first problem that I have solved on these forums!

When do I get a green star like across the road?

Or do I get a gold star like when I went to Sunday School a few(?) years ago?
