Suggestion about old topics reopened
« on: March 01, 2016, 03:59:21 PM »

Having read this just now, would it be an idea for the forum to have after an agreed lapse of time from the latest post something like this appearing when a new post is attempted?

The forum software should already do something similar and automatically displays the following warning:

Warning: this topic has not been posted in for at least 120 days.
Unless you're sure you want to reply, please consider starting a new topic.

Is the 120 a parameter you can change? If so I'd suggest dropping it back to 60.

Yes.  120 is default.

It doesnt really happen that often though,  I think those few that it does occur on, where someone has posted is usually more than 120 anyhow.
Ive seen 2 in the past few days... both iirc more than a year old.

Nope.
Threads are generated using original posts made by the author and stored in a database.  When you call up a thread, posts are displayed as they are made.

The current system makes a check when you are about to respond by checking the original date against today's date and showing the warning in a new window without making any changes to the original post.

TBH I think it would look horrible if it did something like that.  An option I do have is to archive old posts, but tbh I dont think that works well either as all old threads get merged together in one section.   I prefer to keep posts and threads in their correct section which also makes it easier if you are trying to look back for a thread that you read a few months ago in say the ISP section and its now merged with say chat posts.

Most people will see the warning and take heed.   I dont think its been an issue before and the fact that it has happened a few times - ironically twice in that same thread and the other time looked like it was made by someone the same day testing out the warning theory.

Personally I don't always mind old threads being re-awoken.

It's hard to do by accident thanks to the warning.   But it's only a warning, not a crime.  I've  actually done so myself after taking the warning into account, if not here then on other forums.  Usually  I begin with some comment like 'apols for awakening old thread'.

But even if the person awakening the thread chooses not to acknowledge it was Dormant, and if others then choose to respond without realising the time gap, maybe it just proves that there was life in the old thread after all.  In which case, why not resume the discussions? :)
