Cabinets (Split from: Will I ever get FTTC?)
« on: February 27, 2016, 04:01:18 PM »

Admin note:  Split from this topic here, as the thread got confusing when talking about different locations.

Its has what looks like a Huawei 96/128 FTTC cabinet next to it.

That's an ECI cabinet.
[Admin: Its a Huawei]

Wait? Really? It looks nearly identical to an ECI cabinet!

ECI cabinets have more vents at the front.

Indeed. It looks similar to those cabinets which hold an ECI Hi-FOCuS M41 MSAN but it is not one of them.

That's an ECI cabinet.

You can identify them by the grills and kitz has a topic on this which shows the different types of cabinets http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/fttc-cabinets.htm

Ah, you see I thought the amount of grills shown there was of an ECI variation. Oops.

Definitely a Huawei.   Aside from the grill, one the other thing Ive noticed is that the Huawei 96/128 have socket screws on the RH side, whilst the ECI's are hinged, but these are sometimes difficult to see in photos,  which is why we usually go off the shape of the grill vents.

Theres a photo on that page that NS linked to, which if you click on it will show a larger image of  both an ECI and a Huawei 96/128 with a cab in the middle.

My suspicion is that this is a conversion from an EO line,

I agree, before I'd even read your post, the same thought was running through my mind.

Oh right, I see now. I have one question, the PCP shown in the photo is obviously quite new. My PCP has the same structure but what I haven't seen is what I'm about to explain. So, in my nearby village Woodbury there was a very old looking PCP that was possibly a foot wide and a meter high, about the same size as a Huawei 96/128 cabinet. However, this PCP was demolished a few weeks ago. Then, a new PCP was installed which was the same version as the one shown in the above photo and then the new Huawei 256 cabinet was installed next to it. Why did Openreach remove the old PCP? Was it not compatible with the fibre tie cables?

Funny enough the PCP that was attached to the Huawei 96 in that photo was also replaced shortly before fttc.    I dont think the whole thing was demolished though..  I think they just straight replaced the outer casing.    I dunno though as I didnt see it happen  - I dont go down that road too often.
BS or someone else may be best to answer how they normally do it.

This was the old pcp

On the subject of the small Huawei equipped cabinets, I attach three images taken of one that I came across last autumn. At that time, it had not been commissioned and was not powered up.

On the front door, the locking bolts are of what I call the "star" heads. (First picture.) On the right-hand side door, the locking bolts are of what I call the "triangular" heads. At the time I inspected it, the right-hand side door of that cabinet was not secured. Hence the internal view from the right-hand side showing the fibre feed and the tie-cable banks then without the low-pass filters in place. (Second and third picture.) One final point to note is that the security lock, securing the front and the right-hand side doors together, had not then been fitted. The security lock is visible in the picture that nick9one1 provided, above.

Those very old GPO primary cross connection point cabinets (made of cast iron), when filled with the typical complement of E- & D-side cables, will not have sufficient space to allow the relevant tie cables to be installed. So those cabinets are just re-shelled. The casing is removed, leaving all the internal gubbins & cables in-situ and a new pressed-steel casing is fitted.

Just in case anyone would like to see the two labels, inside the right-hand side door, their images are attached below.

Oh, I see! So, nobody connected to the cabinet would have lost connection for a few minutes whilst Openreach renewed the cabinet? They would have just removed the outer case of the previous case and replaced it with the new one?

Yes, that's correct.  :)
