Modem constantly uploading
« on: February 24, 2016, 02:14:29 PM »

Hi, i'm new here, sorry if this is the wrong forum - I recently purchased an unlocked Openreach Huawei EchoLife HG612 3B which connects to my Asus AC68U.
Everything seems to be working fine but noticed something weird in my traffic stats, something was uploading lots of traffic, so checked out the MAC address & turns out its the modem.

It seems to be uploading 20-40GB a day, even on days where all clients on the network have downloaded less than 10GB and i'm not sure what is going on..
If there is no traffic on the network, ie when i'm at work it doesn't upload anything however when i'm in the house and actively using the network the uploading starts, i can see in the traffic log its uploading between 5-8mbps constantly... i've no idea where to start looking, is it a bug in the router traffic stats? running latest Merlin firmware, or a problem with the modem?

Any help would be great - Thanks

How did you check out the MAC address?

Traffic analyzer shows the traffic coming from a MAC instead of hostname, i couldn't find that MAC in my network map, i'm guessing because it's connected to WAN port?
However I found it listed under Tools > network > Ethernet ports & it shows the MAC connected to WAN port

But it's the only device connected to the internet.

Sorry - I'm not sure what you mean?
There are multiple other devices connected to the router accessing the internet, but modem is only device connected directly to internet.

But it's the only device connected to the internet.

Hence all the traffic will be connected via it.

I can view the traffic of all other devices and it looks normal.
Adding up upload traffic from all other devices comes to around 1.5GB over the last 24 hours, the modem itself has uploaded 23GB over the last 24 hours.
I am still seeing normal stats for all my other devices, and only experiencing this anomaly since I installed this new modem

I have exactly the same setup (including Merlin firmware) so definitely something up with modem.  Maybe try a reset of the modem first.  I also bought mine off eBay unlocked with Howlingwolf's 08 firmware but I did a reset before connecting it up just in case previous owner had changed any of the setup.

I previously used a BT HH5 and disabled dhcp/wifi etc so it was acting like a modem and didn't have this issue.
Thanks - From the advert it says i'm running B030SP08 software (V100R001C01B030SP08).

Web GUI interface for configuration and checking line statistics
Telnet interface for direct access and automatic data logging
The TR069 connection (PTM1.301) is disabled.
BT Firewall level is removed.
B030SP08 software (V100R001C01B030SP08)
38m firmware (A2pv6C038m.d24j)
Ability to save a configuration file to your PC
Works with Huawei and ECI cabinets
Fully compatible with the current G.INP upgrade

If I factory reset i'm guessing i won't lose the unlock?

No, a factory reset restores the default configuration for the firmware which is installed - in your case, the appropriate unlocked firmware.

If you're using it in bridge mode with the PPPoE authentication in the router, then there's nothing to change.

Thanks eventually got it reset, holding reset button didn't seem to work, had to login to modem and do a factory reset from there, looking good so far no crazy traffic but will keep an eye on it. Do i have to disable the BTAgent again after a factory reset?
