Goings-on in my area of town
« on: March 26, 2016, 03:18:43 PM »

I spent a little time on what is happening fibrewise in my town. There is, what is known as the “Admirals Estate”, which, despite its close proximity to two enabled PCPs, that served ADSL2/2+, was left out. Now under BDUK  it finally is to be equipped with FTTC. However, the cabinet is quite near the town centre, but the crow fly distance is 1.37 km and road 1.72 from one of the estate roads.
FTTC speeds are therefore low, this screenshot showing one of the better ones.

As can be seen ADSL offers better than fibre!
The Address checker interests me.

Maybe just me, but I haven’t seen mention of a “street side DSLAM cabinet" before, nor the long numbers, so what are both and what’s the function? I’m mystified.

It's the fttc stteet cabinet and can often be found in the address list,  as can the PCP.

I'm  confused as PCP cabinet 29 is located, as I said

, so would not be by far the usual distance from PCP to FTTC cab.

And the long numbers, anyone?

The two 12 digit numbers are UPRN numbers, not sure why BT has two of them, these can be entered on the full address checker page.

If your saying the cabinet is miles from the DSLAM then I've no real idea, it could be the wrong cabinet or it could just be listed under the wrong postcode.

If you select the DSLAM from the drop down list you'll see its served by cabinet 12, not 29.

Cab 12, coincidentally, my PCP and its companion FTTC  cab has been full for some time. The other serving that estate is #8. Cabinet 29 is a new one installed under BDUK, and serves roads ranging from 150 metres from the exchange as far as 1500 metres+ according to Magenta's Code Look.  As that cabinet covers such a wide area in the nature of fill-in, any reason for inaccuracy in Magenta eludes me. Cabinet 28 is similar in nature.
My surmise is that the slow FTTC is pro tem some further work to get full speed
