ADSL signal analogue or digital?
« on: February 18, 2016, 06:52:34 PM »

Hi,

I was having an argument with a few of my colleagues about whether the ADSL signal is analogue or digital over the telephone line.

It looks like this forum is full of people who are quite knowledgeable about the xDSL technology.

What are your thoughts, guys?

Many thanks for your replies.

ADSL on your the copper line is both analog and digital depending on how you look at it. It is like a large number of digital modems working side by side modulating a waveform that is highly intricate, and at the decoding end, analog processing techniques are used to recover the data before digital techniques take over.

Think about an audio CD. The data recorded on there is digital, but in the case of a classical recording, the actual original data is analog (the pair of microphones' output) but converted to digital format, however it remains true that it is something analog that is being represented, and this will always be true for acoustic music because air pressure is an analog quantity.

So the point is it better to talk about how information is being dealt with 'digital processing' / 'analog processing' and the inherent underlying thing that is being represented, rather than talking about whether a thing 'is' analog or digital,

At the physical layer it is analogue.

Analogue wins for me.

The job of a "MoDem" is to modulate and demodulate the digital information onto one or more carrier waves ... and what gets carried on the wire is this set of modulated carrier waves, which are analogue.

If I were only allowed one sentence, I would have to say “analog”

It is an analogue line code that is used.

As mooted above ...... the 'Carried signal' is analogue ...... the kit plugged in at either end of the pair of wires then makes it digital.

Surely, ADSL is analogue and VDSL is digital?

Calm down young man .............. research what the acronym ADSL is, and what VDSL is ...... then report back.

ADSL = Assymetric Digital Subscriber Line.

VDSL = Very-hit-bit-rate Digital Subscriber Line.
