Lag while gaming+ Dis. connection Probs
« on: April 09, 2006, 09:27:50 PM »

Hello all,

I am currently being plagued by 2 seperate problems which are completely ruining my online gaming experience.

I am on a 4 mbit connection shared between 2 comps. Modem/ Router is ASUS AAM6310EV, i think it is very similar to solwise SAR110.

The problem is when i play battlefield 2 and refresh the master server list, if it goes above 100 my friend who is playing couterstrike gets disconnected. These are my current modem settings:

nbsize maxipsess 512

nat global udptimeout 20

nat global tcpidletimeout 3600

nat global tcpclosewait 30

nat global tcptimeout 20

Is their any other setting i can change to improve the situation?

Problem #2

I also suffer from lag every now and then sometimes to a point where it makes a game almost unplayable. I contacted my ISP to monitor my line, but apparently the line is good. These are my DSL Parameters:

Local Tx Power: 9.13 dB
Remote Tx Power: 13.7 dB
Local Line Atten.: 10.0 dB
Remote Line Atten.: 15.5 dB
Local SNR Margin: 26.5 dB
Remote SNR Margin: 8.0 dB

Is 8dB is too low for remote SNR? I donno what might be causing the lag, i tried uplugging 1 comp from the network to see if the problem improved but it was still there. Also bought a new Zyxel 660R modem/router, lag was a lot worse using the zyxel compared to the ASUS. I dont know what else to do, thinking of moving to a new ISP.

Any help is appreciated and thanks in advance. :)

Sorry been away for a few days, so only just seen this post.

>> The problem is when i play battlefield 2 and refresh the master server list, if it goes above 100 my friend who is playing couterstrike gets disconnected.

It could very well be the maximum sessions that the router can cope with at anyone time. If the ASUS is indeed like the SAR110, then the maximum IP sessions that it can maintain at any one time is 512, and it seems like you have already set this to the max.

The only settings I could find in the SAR which may affect this sort of thing happening are detailed here.
Aside from that I cant come up with anything new Im afraid. :/

>> I also suffer from lag every now and then sometimes to a point where it makes a game almost unplayable.

Can you identify the point at which the lag is occuring?
Performing a tracert is a useful tool which may help pin point where things start to slow down.

>> Is 8dB is too low for remote SNR?

It depends how stable your SNR Margin is and what "type" of adsl you are on.
Since you are on one of the "higher speeds" ie 4Mb, then as long as the SNR margin remains pretty static, then you should be fine.
Does it ever dip any lower than this?

Also does your router record any CRC/HEC errors?

Thanks for taking the time to reply kitz, greatly appreciate it.

Further to all the problems I listed above I was also experiencing constant connection drops until I used this command:

modify ppp global keepalive enable
modify ppp global pppsesstimer nevertimeout

The lag problem has got me stumped. While I might be experiencing lag when playing battlefield 2, my m8 who is using the same connection and playing Counter strike might not experience it and vice versa. Recently the lag situation has been improving; don?t know what factor has changed to help. SNR was at 7 previously and recently at 8. I will carry out a tracert next time I experience lag.

I just had a look through router log, didn?t see any crc errors. I don?t know how often it clears the logs, the router date and time was all wrong.  The router is essentially the same as the BT 205, so if that records crc errors then this one should as well I guess

I carried out a tracert while I was experiencing lag, this is the result:

Glad you found a solution to the first problem. :)

From the tracerts it would seem that the routers at hops 2+4 are the ones that are having the problems - those are likely to be your ISP.
This isnt conclusive though, it could well be that when those particular routers are busy they are instructed to respond to pings as low priority, as it doesnt seem to have slowed down the overall ping.
It possibly could be that your ISP has capacity issues at peak times that are just beginning to materialise?

Im not sure how adsl is set up in other countries (ie non BT backhaul), but here in the UK if you are having problems with line related problems then a change of ISP doesnt cure the situation, unless it is specifically ISP related.

The CLI command to get your error stats is

$get dsl stats cntrs

On the SAR110 the counters are cleared on full reboot/reset or

$reset dsl stats cntrs

you may also find the following command useful to help break down the stats

$get dsl stats curr

To set the time theres a tutorial here
http://www.kitz.co.uk/tute/sntp.htm

Hope this info helps.

By the way things are unfolding looks like I dont have a connection problem after all. I will do a complete format today to rule out my comp for causing the lag probs.

How are things doing now?
It doesnt look like a line problem from those stats to me.
imho judging from the tracerts its possibly looking more towards the isp side of things. Keep an eye on those and see what happens.

Kitz you would be right it saying it?s not a line problem. In fact the 'lag' I was experiencing was low fps. I didn?t suspect it was my computer since it was more than capable of running the games at the settings I was using. The problem was a build of heat which I think was throttling either my cpu and/or graphics card to a lower clock speed. I haven't figured out which 1 yet. I realised this by chance. When I had my comp case open I would never experience low fps. Thanks again for all the help, greatly appreciated.  :D

Glad you have at least now got an indication where the problem is occuring, and hopefully suss whether its the CPU or graphics card.
