Security Question
« on: March 21, 2008, 07:35:47 AM »

I run McAfee and yesterday it blocked a trojan. When I do a full scan(every week)all it ever removes are tracking cookies. Is there a chance stuff can get past the security software and is there a way to check if anything is in your computer that shouldn't be.I am using vista and have Mcafee for another two years free.

Hi UB

if you goto http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?productid=symhome&langid=ie&venid=sym you can do a free online security/virus scan on symantics web site, i use it quite often to see if any nasties got thru my other defenses

Just check the file too.
I had AVG pull up a file on my system about a week or so back stating that the file was a trojan.   Said file is one Ive had for several years over various AVs  and one I wanted to keep.
False positives do occur on occasion.

>> False positives do occur on occasion
Some "False positives" that show up on some peoples PCs are either key-generators or program cracks, because technically cracks are a trojan in-so-far as they are designed to change part of a programs normal operating process without the programs permission.

>> where would I look for dodgy files/how do you tell?.
By running at different times using different programs then placing the result/s and search on the internet (or Googling as some may say) to see what other people are saying about them.

Some time back I tried three different programs one after the other and all three came back with a degree of different results.
So what one program may pick up, another will either not know about or ignore it as being safe.

..or in my case some stuff I programmed several years ago - nothing naughty, but it does access some system files.

Just found it strange that its been considered OK for many years during which time Ive had a few different AVs on and it only happened to be picked up a few weeks ago.

Well I'm still not any wiser. All I know is I had a pop up messaage in the bottom right hand cornerof my screen from Mcafee saying trojan blocked.I didn't have time to remember any other details as the message was soon gone.If it says it was blocked does that mean It would not have got into my computer?
Sorry for asking what might seem stupid questions.
Is ther any way of finding this out in my Mcafee AV software?

depending on which version of mcafee you run, open it, click on 'view recent events' on the left and it should show you what it has blocked, if it doesn't then click on 'view log' at the bottom.

Its McAfee security centre version 7.2.I had a look and the only thing I can see is where it has removed tracking cookies when it did a scan

You're ok UncUB, if MacAfee says it blocked it, that's what it did and the nasty will not have got onto your PC.

I'm sure that somewhere in the properties/options in the prog there is a way to switch off these notifications.....I know I can in my firewall etc.

Phil, it just means your anti-virus program is doing its job... nothing to lose sleep over.

The only time I start getting concerned when pop-up's are being blocked is if the page/s will not open "properly"
If it will not open because of blocking the pop-up then I just think to myself "do I really want to go to this site anyway!
If I do then I may just allow it for xx minutes.
