Battery socket HG612.

Anyone used the Battery socket HG612 to power it ?.

I have a set of 6 fixed IP's From  Eclipse  isp.BT ADSL2(G992.3) line>HG612 as a Modem, Bridge, WAN Not Bound to LAN1 or 2 + Also have FTTP (G.984) No One isp Fixed IP >Dual WAN pfSense (Hardware Firewall and routing).> Two WAN's, Ethernet LAN, DMZ LAN, Zyxel GS1100-24 Switch.

No, that will not work!  :no:

It is, in fact, the socket into which the the BBU telemetry cable is plugged. Internally that socket is connected to a UART, as the telemetry signals are sent via a serial interface between the HG612 and the BBU.

OK, but I thought it was 'Battery Back Up' for when you only have a 'VOIP' phone, so you can make emergency calls :no:
What's a 'UART' ?.

The cabling sequence is --

AC Mains ---> PSU ---> BBU ---> HG612
                                      |_________|

240VAC into the PSU, 12VDC out of the PSU.
12VDC from the PSU into the BBU, keeping the rechargeable cells trickle charged, 12VDC out of the BBU.
12VDC from the BBU into the HG612. If the mains input fails, the cells will keep the HG612 powered for a finite time.

The BBU and HG612 will "talk" to each other over the telemetry cable (the lower link in my ASCII art, above). It is via that "chit-chat" that the data is provided which then populates the Status --> Battery page of the HG612's GUI.

[The Huawei HG8240 ONT is powered similarly but I haven't yet mentioned it in my (currently stalled) experimental examination of such a device.]

So I will forget that idea.

Will it power from a 12v battery ok from the other socket that the power adapter plugs in ?.
I do not have a UPS box.

I'm still getting these odd changes in my ADSL line every time it gets Dark/light 24/7 :o , so I was going to rig a battery up and if an OR chaps comes to look I can kill the mains power feed to my house and let him see it's nothing in my house interfering with my DSL.

Yes, most definitely. (Just make sure you get the polarity correct!)

Do you know if that should still be the case with the latest unlocked firmware?  I'm using a BBU from a HG8240 (found cheap on ebay) with my HG612, and don't get any info in the webui when the telemetry cable is connected - it just says "Missing battery".

I would have thought so. However there is a possibility that when Wolfy (Howling Wolf) reinstated the GUI which had been removed something was "not quite right".  :-\

Presumably you have checked the telemetry cable for continuity? I don't possess such a cable, so I haven't yet tried the experiment.

I actually have two HG612s and 2 BBUs (purchased separately, a few months apart), and get the same problem with both.  So whilst it could be the cables, it seems unlikely.

Any idea if there's an older firmware floating around I could try, just out of curiousity?

Have you ever seen the battery status page in the webgui populated with info?

I received a spare HG612 today, and tried a couple of the old firmwares you kindly shared with me, and they all insist the battery is missing.  I've tried both BBUs, and both cables...

So I'm beginning to think the functionality has never worked...

I'll give a few more firmware variations a try though.

No, I have never seen a working example and, thinking about it, I have never read any report where an end-user has described having a BBU supplied with a HG612. I wonder if the relevant code was just too big and made the firmware image exceed the maximum upper bound?
