Wireless capabilities of new iPads
« on: December 29, 2015, 01:27:41 AM »

How fast are new iPads' (iPad 6, Air2, iPad Pro) wireless NICs, and what standards do they support now?

I have an iPad 5, which I think supports only 802.11n and below. It can speak 60 Mbps-ish, I believe (not very scientific  :-[ ) but I don't know about any faster than that. (For comparison, I  measured the old 802.11n plug-in Netgear NIC in my Thinkpad laptop at a solid 300 Mbps true throughput, talking to a desktop PC through a WAP. At close range.)

I'm looking for an excuse to buy an iPad Pro. They are presumably not a bargain at the moment. Maybe an iPad 6 can be had for sensible money.

On the older models,  60Mbps is tops if you are stood next to the router.

Despite the headline grabbing speeds, the reality for AC is circa 250Mbps.    Because it uses higher frequencies, the further you are from the router the faster speeds will drop and penetration is not as good.

Btw you will need a wireless AC router or AP.   You'll also likely need to be in the same room to benefit.   Finally there is the limitation of your internet speed.

Thanks very much for that, a touch of reality.
