I have just two questions, for now --
  • What was the small memento?
  • Are you ready for a visit from Walter (without wheelbarrow)?
    :congrats:

As long as we can get the hall free of clutter he can. In fact if anyone else is local you're more than welcome to pop over if you don't mind the mess and the dogs ;)

The memento is a piece of the 12 tube. They waste far too much of it IMHO but the first time they were installing the 12 tube between where the manifold is now and the main road I was given a piece about a foot long. I'll try and get a picture of it if you want.

I have a question or two, maybe burakkucat will know the answer. Those pings of 30+ms, is that normal for FTTP installs? Is that due to the fibre implementation (PON)?

Thanks.

The ping is sub 10ms on Ethernet now. It settled pretty quickly. I'm sat outside again and over wireless this is the result

I will suggest that the ping duration is purely down to normal network behaviour beyond the OLT at the Dorking exchange (the fibre head-end).  :-\

It would be very interesting to see what is the equivalent ping duration between the ONT (in Ryan's home) and the OLT (in the fibre head-end exchange).  ;)

I too would like to see the ping time. Along with the actual capacity, the equipment itself...phwoar getting myself all excited

Nice one, was the wait worth it? I bet it was  ;)

Actually it was an anti climax. Save the initial excitement it's been so long coming I keep wondering when I'm going to wake up aha.

Wow, very nice - I wish....

Can I ask please how much you are charged for the service etc.

Thanks

It's about £50/month if I recall correctly.

All in all I'm pretty impressed. I really need to sort out the network this side though. The access point I'm currently using is an Asus DSL-N55U which is fed by ethernet via a switch in the attic. It's a mess and would give most network admins a heart attack. Hoping to have a business grade router, switch and a Ubiquiti AP or two.

It's also an odd feeling being held back by the speeds offered by wireless networking.

Edit: Should anyone be interested I did a ping test too. Will do one from my PC shortly

The velocity of light (in a vacuum) is ~2.998 x 108 ms-1 and I shall suggest that the length of the fibre from Ryan's ONT to the Dorking exchange OLT is rather less than 2.998 x 108 metres. Hence I don't think any of the usual "ping testing" software will be able to accurately register the duration.  ;)

In fact I think it would be rather amusing to see what the various on-line test sites report . . .

http://www.dslreports.com/tools/pingtest
http://www.pingtest.net/

And some of the speed testing sites . . .

Well here is a ping test done from my PC just now:

The 'Official' BT speed tester:

DSL Reports speed test:

DSL reports ping test:

Lastly the TBB result which I think I broke

How's that burakkucat?  ;)

You're very welcome. Might re-run some of them off-peak. So far I'm struggling to use all the bandwidth. It's magical. Watching netflix in HD, downloading something to the sky box and browsing the web. No waiting or buffering. Brilliant :)

Update for you folks.

It's not working properly. Twice in 24 hours we've had loss of signal/light. We have nothing for an hour or two then it returns on it's own. Very odd.  We have an engineer visit booked today but given this morning's events I'm not sure if he or she will actually arrive now.

Anyway I will keep you apprised of the situation.

It could be something very simple . . . such as a faulty Huawei HG8240 ONT, which would be fixed by a direct "swap-out".

If it's working at the time of the engineer visit you'll probably encounter the usual problems with diagnosing an intermittent fault. how often is it occurring and does it give any indication what is wrong? can you actually see if the fibre is lit?
