sky bbc peering gone to pot?
« on: January 04, 2016, 01:23:07 AM »

Pinged bbc and thought I was interleaved O_o but just some weird transit routing going on.

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.246.78]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  home.gateway [192.168.1.253]
  2     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  3    11 ms    10 ms    10 ms  02780842.bb.sky.com [2.120.8.66]
  4    28 ms    73 ms     9 ms  xe-1-1-0.r2.bb-fo.lon3.vrsn.net [195.66.225.46]

  5    17 ms    16 ms    16 ms  xe-1-3-0.r2.bb-fo.ams1.vrsn.net [199.16.94.174]

  6    15 ms    15 ms    15 ms  ae2.668.r2.vidn-fo.ams1.vrsn.net [199.16.95.157]

  7     *        *        *     Request timed out.
  8    16 ms    16 ms    16 ms  217.30.83.10
  9     *        *        *     Request timed out.
 10     *        *        *     Request timed out.
 11    18 ms    17 ms    17 ms  ae0.er01.cwwtf.bbc.co.uk [132.185.254.93]
 12    18 ms    18 ms    18 ms  132.185.255.165
 13    17 ms    17 ms    17 ms  212.58.246.78

For anyone who has been following my line on MDWS, it seems my stats stopped logging (even locally) on the 22nd dec, telnet when I tried earlier wasnt responding, and my internet went down with the sync still active earlier so I power cut the billion modem for 40 mins or so and is back now.  At the point stats stopped logging it had 152 days uptime, so it seems these billion 8800 devices still suffer some kind of lockup at 100+ days uptime. :(

I was wondering similar yesterday on my Plusnet connection:

Tracing route to bbc.co.uk [212.58.244.22]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1    <1 ms    <1 ms    <1 ms  fritz.box [192.168.178.1]
  2     7 ms    13 ms    29 ms  lo0.10.central10.pcl-bng01.plus.net [195.166.130.138]
  3     7 ms     7 ms     7 ms  irb.10.PCL-CR01.plus.net [84.93.249.81]
  4     7 ms     7 ms     7 ms  ae1.ptw-cr01.plus.net [195.166.129.0]
  5     7 ms     8 ms     7 ms  xe-1-1-0.r2.bb-fo.lon3.vrsn.net [195.66.225.46]
  6    15 ms    14 ms    15 ms  xe-1-3-0.r2.bb-fo.ams1.vrsn.net [199.16.94.174]
  7    15 ms    14 ms    32 ms  xe-0-2-0.r1.bb-fo.ams1.vrsn.net [199.16.94.177]
  8    14 ms    14 ms    14 ms  ae3.667.r2.vidn-fo.ams1.vrsn.net [199.16.95.155]
  9     *        *        *     Request timed out.
 10     *        *        *     Request timed out.
 11    15 ms    15 ms    18 ms  132.185.255.148
 12    14 ms    14 ms    14 ms  212.58.244.22

I'm used to seeing sub-10ms to bbc.co.uk, seeing similar x...lon3.vrsn.net then x....ams1.vrsn.net with (in my case) a very clear jump in latency at this point - I see yours had 9ms lowest reading on lon3.vrsn.net then a jump to 15/16ms on ams.vrsn.net

wonders... is lon3 London and ams1 Amsterdam? (would requests to BBC possibly go via Amsterdam??), could this be a consequence of the recent DDOS attack on the BBC???

Yes and yes, it's possible and it's also possible.

back when I was with Nildram/pipex/tiscali/talktalk business my traffic was always routed around Europe for some reason. Contacting a server in the US would go from london to frankfurt then munich and then back to london before it went on to the US. It was weird and pointless.

ahh I didnt know they suffered a ddos, then it makes sense, they are likely rerouting traffic, so as such is not either a plusnet or sky problem.  Thanks

hmmmm.   I couldn't access iplayer last night.
However I thought that may be something to do with the fact Im temporary using a dynamic IP* that shows itself as Infonet.

---
*long story but it appears Vodafone made some major network changes last month.
Resulting in certain IPs not being whitelisted and I couldnt access my account.
Vodafone led me a right merry dance..  and Im a bit sick of their false promises and downright lies. :/

My next door neighbour claimed that ISIS had prevented him from getting Radio 4 over the Internet.

Yep I am..   but vodafone have mucked up their network and loads of people cant access their accounts.
Turns out they are doing some sort of IP banning and white listing which I got caught up in.    I was on a static IP so couldn't access my account which I needed to because they stuffed that up too.

Easiest way was to ditch my static IP because vodafone are pathetic at fixing anything, but now I seem to have picked up an IP that according to RIPE belongs to Infonet not Plusnet.
