A high-pass filter will be found within a modem or a modem/router and its purpose, of course, is to block all telephony related signals.

And the faceplate filter should be blocking anything other than telephony band signals from the phone (I think, I'm assuming it works in both directions).   So the most likely possibility is that the phone is putting some sort of loading on the line that's reducing the DSL signal strength, rather than outputting noise with the DSL bands.  Does that make sense?

The variable loading affects the operation of the microfilter.

This I why the ADSL Nation microfilter is designed as it is, with one or more transistors. It attempts to provide a consistent solution to cover all the cases - off-hook, on-hook, one to four phones - and to adapt to the varying load possibilities, according to their blurb.

Watched the SNR change as I altered the phone, double micro filtered, unplugged the phone altogether, that kind of day thing. The SNRM worsened when the stupid phone went off-hook.

Mine didn't change going off hook, nor does it with the old one.  The drop comes simply from connecting the (powered on) phone.  I didn't try with the phone powered off.

Yes, indeed.

Yes, again, and that is also my suspicion.  :)

As an alternative to the N300 you could try a telephone adapter such as the Linksys SPA3102. http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/physical-security/wvc200-wireless-g-ptz-internet-video-camera-audio/data_sheet_c78-502105.pdf This provides similar functionality, but you just plug your existing phone or base station into it. Either landline or VOIP calls can be made by means of an access code. It is more complicated to configure, but it works well. I have one connected to my PABX. There are a few to be had on a well known auction site.

It's annex J
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.992.3_Annex_J

You won't get Annex J in the UK - as that is based on ADSL over ISDN which isn't available/rolled here.

As someone else has mentioned, Annex M is the version which works over POTS (and is compatible with ADSL in the UK)

I think what Weaver's hoping for is naked DSL, where all the bandwidth is available for DSL without any reserved for audio.   Annex J would do that.

Aesmith is quite correct.

No, I knew annex J is not available in Britain, I was just dreaming and drooling.

Well naked DSL is coming to the UK but only over FTTC - guess there is not much demand for it over ADSL.

I read about naked DSL, but I thought that was just a charging thing. Great if we can get Annex J with it, never connected the two.

Just got my replacement Gigaset N300A and the good news is that it doesn't affect the DSL in the way that the previous one did.   So it looks like a simple case of a faulty unit.   Will get it configured to replace our existing phone this weekend.

That's good news indeed. I hope the N300A works as well for you as it does for me.  :)
