Uploading and posting images
« on: December 31, 2015, 01:33:49 AM »

I really have no idea how to upload screen shots to Kitz. I've managed to workout what strange buttons need to be pressed simultaneously on my iPad to grab the image in the first place. But what to do with the saved image to make it publicly visible on the web?

I've uploaded it to the flickr.com website, which is easy enough but getting a clean URL to the image itself is currently beyond me. I also have to make sure that it is public not private.

There has to be a cleaner quicker way?

You can add up to three attachments of 300KB each, which means you'll probably need to shrink the picture. I've never used Flickr but there must be an option to create a share link then you can simply paste the link or use the img tags.

Using attachments is the easy option, but do be aware that there are limits. As things stand at the moment, attachments are stored on the server for ever, and from time to time Kitz has had to increase the storage capacity. This is the reason a lot of forums disable attachments altogether. So please be moderate in the use of attachments, and use links to photo sharing sites if you have large images or large numbers. Most photo sharing sites provide links for embedding your images in forum messages.

[Edit] There's a rather old (but still relevant) howto here: http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,3503.msg86249.html#msg86249

I'll stick to Flickr then, if I can work out how to get a URL direct to the image then that might be slightly neater or more usable. I suspect that the use of IMG tags can be a nightmare?

Using the img tags is easy, well it's easy on a computer with a keyboard, same goes for most of the other tags.

Simply select the image icon below the bold button,  this will insert the image tags, now you need enter image url between the tags which is the fiddly part on a phone or tablet because it usually ends up selecting part of the image tags. Or simply type [img] then paste your url then close it off with [forward slash chr img]

On most forums you get a little pop up which allows you to easily paste the link then creates and inserts the img tags correctly.

It's getting a URL straight to the image, rather than to a page containing it, hot linking , that's the hard bit for me.

Can't right-click on an iPad, afaik. That's what I would have done on a Microsoft box. So maybe it's the three dots icon that I need?

Somebody doesn't know about the [nobbc][/nobbc] tags which you use to make posts showing the bulletin board code!

This is how you post an image:

which gives this:

Long time since I had one but holding your finger on an item for a few seconds had the same effect and available options popped up

From SMF

http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Category:Bulletin_Board_Code

Some of them wont work on all forums.  For eg [html] is disabled for security reasons.
