Ian Murdock, creator of Debian GNU/Linux, dies
« on: December 30, 2015, 11:14:50 PM »

Ian Murdock released the first version of the Debian distribution in 1993, and it's still going strong now, with thousands of developers supporting more computer platforms than any other operating system. He died earlier today at the age of 42 in rather mysterious circumstances. He was one of the major pioneers in the Linux world.

Sad news. And precise details are somewhat clouded.

I came across this a couple of days ago on reddit. Someone posted that he was claiming he was going to commit suicide on his Twitter account and that everybody should pull out all the stops to prevent him. There was a lot of confusion with many people thinking his account had been hacked. Then yesterday his death was confirmed and so it appears his Twitter posts were a true reflection of his state of mind.

As a sign of the sick and twisted world we live in, where political correctness and "social justice warriors" dominate social media and the media in general, there was apparently much angst because he used the word "nigger" in at least one of his tweets(not as hate speech in that context). In the same tweet he stated he was contemplating suicide - but apparently using the word "nigger" was an issue, not suicide. It's a shame politically correct dimwits lack a sense of priority and humanity.  >:(

I must confess it is not a name I recognise, but does sound a tragic and very sad series of events. :(

Can't help notice though, from https://bits.debian.org/2015/12/mourning-ian-murdock.html

Debian would go on to become the world's Universal Operating System

Err...  Really?  :-\

Priorities way wrong, in that case.

Why on earth do you say that? Debian isn't a commercial OS, it's a completely free, open source system. In effect it's a gift to the world from its developers, and they've made that free gift accessible to as many people as they can. That's why they call it universal.

by universal they mean it can run on just about any platform.

There are other Operaing Systems that run on multiple platforms, such as VxWorks.   But even so, describing it as a Universal Operating System is one thing, describing it as "the world's Universal Operating System" is another, and that is what caught my eye.

But let's not dwell upon it, he clearly made great contributions to a hugely important OS.
