ADSL Modem/Router Advice Needed
« on: December 29, 2015, 11:33:09 AM »

I've been using my ASUS N55u for a good while now and for some reason today, the WIFI has totally packed in on it. I've noticed actually over the last few weeks a degrade in performance.

Anyway.

Rummaging around in all the PC Parts i have i found an old Netgear DG834 with DGTeam FW flashed.

Im currently using this, with the SNR tweaked down to 50% MY current LIne stats are:

Downstream :14400
LA: 27.5db
Noise Margin: 6.4db

Upstream: 888kbps (Urghhh)
LA: 17.8db
Noise Margin: 13.9db

The question is, do i carry on using this and get a Wifi extender/repeater to boost the WIFI, or do i invest in a new ADSL Modem Router (Which im fully prepared to do) and if so, which one?

I've read up quite a bit about the Broadcom chipset and i know the Netgear imusing now, probably has that chipset in or some form of it.

Can anyone recommend what hey would do here? I've looked at the D6400 and the VR900.

THoughts would be welcome :)

Get a good wireless access point. There are plenty of excellent performers around.

I use Zyxel and TP-Link access points.

I have a couple of TP-Link devices, £50, 5 GHz-only. Very reliable.

I have two Zyxel NWA3560-n devices, 2.4 GHz and 5GHz dual-band. These are unfriendly and nasty to configure as the web UI is confusing and slow. Multiple SSIDs, very powerful UI and they have been rock-solid.

I am thinking about Ubiquiti three-packs with seamless handover.

I've ordered the Archer D9 from Amazon.

Will see what the performance/wireless coverage is like, if i'm no better off ill send it back.

Would have opted for the VR900, but unfortunately im still stuck on ADSL2+ :/

That would not be a problem. I am currently using a TP-Link VR900 for my ADSL2 connection (not ADSL2+).

Yeah but that's the only difference I could see between the two. The fact the Vr900 supported vdsl2

Everything else looked more or less the same
