A & A has also had to make some serious internal network capacity improvements so as to be able to cater for this properly:

The terabyte services are delivered using the TalkTalk Wholesale network.

Will you be upgrading your Firebrick to one with a fibre optic port?  :-\

(I'm still thinking about how you could achieve some form of isolation -- for the times when there is an atmospheric electrical disturbance near Weaverland.)

Re lightning: The pair of fibre media converters is the way to go, plus vlan switch to multiplex them. But confusion due to pain and drugs has marred any chance of progress. I'd also have to find a volunteer to do the physical setup.

Lightning every week or so now. Lightning alert system is working properly though, thanks to excellent tip from manual. Many thanks.

I would need the vlan switch in any case if I am to get a fourth line, as there are only three free ports on the Firebrick 2000 series.

These Firebricks unfortunately do not have fibre ports at all. They aren't that fast. The 2700 has an engine good for about 350 Mb per second, if memory serves. Mine is a 2500 which is not as fast, perhaps 2500 Mbps.

The new Terabyte services are 80 Mb FTTC, so no good to me unfortunately, as the men in suits have decided that I don't merit FTTC.

Reading Adrian's recent post I saw --

Quote
We even have new hardware this coming year, with the next generation of FireBrick expected this year with a true fibre interface and faster throughput and IPSec. We are working on the next generation of the larger scale kit as well, obviously.

-- and I thought of you, performing some real-life testing for A&A/FireBrick under adverse conditions.  :-\

Ah. (Drugs.) I missed that snippet about new Firebrick. My apologies. :-[

That would save me one fibre media convertor. I seem to remember a rumour about new FB models coming out.

I think RevK is a director of Firebrick.

I'm not sure my financial director, Janet, aka Mrs Weaver, would sign off on a new top-end Firebrick at the moment, not until we've made a bit more money.

After a spare Firebrick for lightning insurance purposes, and some Ubiquiti kit at some point poss. And a new faster iPad. Too much pressure.

Still looking out for excuse to buy a Raspberry Pi too, if I can afford it. The fact there's only one Ethernet port (I know about the USB -ugh) is putting me off tho.

There are other alternatives to the Raspberry Pi if the strangled Ethernet port bothers you. Things like Intel's NUC and Banana Pi. Probably not as well understood as the Pi2 though.

Looks like there could be price reductions coming on Home::1 etc. if you switch over to TT backhaul!

is a good move forward by aaisp, but it took them too long to bring this out, during the past few months plulse8 who also offer a talktalkbusiness based FTTC service have gained a lot of traction due to a fair few users migrating to them and reporting back been happy.  pulse8 is a more better price point but of course aaisp has its own unique advantages.

This is overall great news for the market tho as we need more services that dont use BT wholesale.
