BT error message
« on: December 23, 2015, 12:58:37 PM »

This is a strange new error message from BT which was just seen in Andrews & Arnold's logs when I tried to get a modem status report (with sync rates, error counts, that kind of stuff):

“BT Test xDSL Status Check:Rejected 2971:Duns Number Validation failed against oneseibel database”

Anyone any clue?

Hmm . . . I think it is suggesting that you should ask your ISP, A&A:-\

Indeed so. I just wondered if anyone else had ever seen some of this BT-speak, which is what it is in any other context?

This is marked as one of the messages that have come from BT's servers into Andrews and Arnold systems.

I know a little about DUNS numbers as does any IOS App developer, it being required (by Apple) to trade on the App Store.

Basically, a global unique number that identifies a business, used by all businesses from self-employed to huge enterprises.  Apple's own description is as good as I've found...

https://developer.apple.com/support/D-U-N-S/

See also the authority for Duns allocation, Dun & Bradsheet (UK Website of global company).

http://www.dnb.co.uk

I would hazard a guess that some part of some process is validating a DUNS number (maybe A&A's DUNS number), and it is failing validation?

Sounds in that case possibly like a bug in either one or the other company's software systems for talking to one another and making changes in BT-land. This was A & A asking BT to do something or other over their ISPs' API, which I assume is documented in a SIN nnn-type spec somewhere.

Thanks to sevenlayermuddle for elucidating. Perhaps BT (or A & A) temporarily forgot who A & A is.
